Calories burned question
OK, I know that we have said that exercise equipment gives bad feed back
on calories burned but still, I have to ask. Do you really burn more calories on an elliptical machine than when running? For example: Yesterday 52 minutes on elliptical machine (50 minutes + 2 minute cool down) machine read 829 calories burned Tuesday running on treadmill (6 mph, 4.5 miles plus .25 mile cool down) machine read 485 calories for run and 20 additional for cool down Now, I understand that you are probably pushing more weight on the elliptical than when running but that is a pretty significant difference. FWIW, the running reading seems more or less accurate (100 cals per mile + some extra because of the hills in random). -- jmk in NC |

I think many machines give a high reading on calories burned. I tried www.caloriesperhour.com but there comments under elliptical were 'awaiting study data'. Beverly |

I think many machines give a high reading on calories burned. Well, I was sort of figuring that the amounts listed were for flat, no resistance, working high "fat burn"/ low "cardio." If you select random and add a fairly significant resistance and are working high in the "cardio" range (80-85%), I would think you'd burn more, no? Sorry, I just find this to be confusing :-/. -- jmk in NC |

Your relative heart rate is going to be a good indication of which machine makes you spend more calories. To burn energy, your mitochondria needs oxygen, which can only be carried to them by blood. So, the more oxygen burned, the more blood flow. Hence my suggestion to compare heart rates. Yeah, I really need to get that HRM :-( On the elliptical machine it says that I should be dead. I am at the 87% range most of the time. On the treadmill, I don't get a reading until cooldown when I put my hands down. I have the elliptical set at "hillier" than the treadmill -- mostly because I'm a lot more used to it. -- jmk in NC |

Well, you can always try to count your heart rate with the help of a watch and your fingers... it is not that difficult. While running? I don't think so -- unless you want me to fall off the machine! ;-) -- jmk in NC |
