EXtreme Problem Need some advise
I have been doing Low Carb (Under 20g a day) for the last 3 months.
in that time I have not gained or lost ONE SINGLE POUND at first 5-6 weeks ago I thought it was the nitrates. I have since completely eliminated all nitrates. I also consume a minimum of 100oz of water a day. What in the world could I be doing wrong ? I have been eating roughly 1600-2000 calories a day and most days in the last 2 weeks I have managed 40 minute bike rides daily. (rain lately has damped that) what in the world is going on ? I have been 365 for over a year now. each time I weigh myself I am still EXACTLY 365 never 366 never 364 always the same 365 (shouldn't my weight fluctuate a little ?) I do not mind eating this way. (cravings and such are not an issue for me) temptations do not exist IE I have no will power issues in sticking with it. but eating this way IS very very expensive ($1200 in food in the last 3 months is a LOT of money to have lost not one pound) Breakfast is pretty much just eggs. with sometimes pepperoni or sausage tossed in. Dinner is usually chicken with veggies (green beens, cauliflower, or brocoli) I usually come in under 20g carbs and that is almost 100% veggies as atkins advices. What can I possibly be doing wrong ? I used to eat a lot of sugar free jello but in the last 5 weeks or so since I dropped the nitrates (pork roll spamm etc..) I also dropped almost all the jello (a few servings total in that time) I also nibble on cheese and pickles here and their and in the last week I found Sunflower Kernals (5g carb for the whole bag but that one bag has lasted 8 days) I just use it as a crunchy when driving. What in the world is going on ????? Suggestions please Chris Taylor http://www.nerys.com/ |

Responces below
The numbers don't add up... if you did nothing but sleep all day, you would have a BMR of about 3000. Light activity pushes you to 4000. Even at 2000 calories a day, you should be losing 2 - 4 pounds per week even forgetting about the carbohydrates. The only things I have not weighed are the 0 carb items (example I do not weigh the chicken or fish I have etc.. I will look into getting a scale to measure this stuff. What is BMR ?? This suggests you are mistaken either about the counts of the food you are eating or about your actual weight or both. $1200 for food in three months is also not consistent with the numbers you are reporting. I spend on average $100 a week on food (Meat and Fish is VERY VERY Expensive where I live) Example. Chicken is $5 a pound Swordfish is $7 a pound (most fish here is $5-$7 a pound) about the only thing cheap are the green beans (50 cents a can) and the Eggs ($2 a dozen) A couple of suggestions: - Keep a log of everything you eat and the counts for a while. Without this, it is easy to "forget" things you ate when making your daily estimate. It's the old "the broken ones don't count" syndrome. Fitday is kind of anal-retentive, but it wouldn't kill you to use it for a couple of weeks. I have been looking things up in fitday. found it very useful especially for "can I eat this" kind of questions. it is anal but persistance pays off :-) I also have a palm pda that I am using a lot lately. I will try to start keeping a log of everything I stick in my mouth. it is baffling me as well since I assumed if you ate less calories than you burned it HAD to come from your stores (where else would it come from ??) Get some Ketostix. If you are not turning them purple at 20 gm for three months, you have a silicon metabolism or your gram count is off. I guess I will have to grab some of these. When I did this diet for a short time a year ago I lost 35 pounds in 2 months (was 399 !!) but it stopped working so I stopped doing it since it cost so much money. I never did gain any of it back (good!) but can not seem to lose anymore. Calibrate your scale and/or compare it with a balance beam type scale. Find a store that sells them and try one there if you don't want to pay for a visit to a doctor's office. Actually oddly enough the only place that HAS a scale that can weigh me (even my doctors does not go that high) is the local veterinariam. it reads and it showing progress for my sister just fine (she has lost 23 pounds so far) I also thought it odd that I always weigh the same. I figured their should be at the minimum slight fluctuations of a few pounds etc.. up and down. I certaintly PREY I am not heavier than it can weigh since that would mean I am heavier than 365 :-( Measure your waist and track it. I have not done this I will start. What is BMR ?? BMR is Basal Metabolic Rate. It's the number of calories your body needs to keep itself healthy. You shouldn't eat below your BMR on a consistant basis or you risk slowing your metabolism down and burning muscle to compensate for the lack of energy to maintain your bodies functions. I spend on average $100 a week on food (Meat and Fish is VERY VERY Expensive where I live) Example. Chicken is $5 a pound Swordfish is $7 a pound (most fish here is $5-$7 a pound) about the only thing cheap are the green beans (50 cents a can) and the Eggs ($2 a dozen) If you're eating too many calories you won't lose no matter how few carbs you eat. If you eat too few calories you'll slow your metabolism down and you'll stall. Another thing to consider is protein. It converts to carbohydrate at a rate of about 58% so if you're eating too much protein you could be going over your carb limit without realizing it. -- Jeri 265/189/120 Atkins since 11/5/01 "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." |

Everyone fluctuates at least a couple of pounds. Have you noticed any change in waist size? Have you eliminated all aspartame besides the sugar free jello? Atkins claimed aspartame could stall some people, though it hasn't been a problem for most of us. Are you on any medication? Using any of the LC bars or candy? I suggest you post a couple days of typical food and beverage intake, maybe we can then spot something. |

Chris,
If you really have been eating what you say you have--and I have no reason to doubt that, it sounds like you really need to see a doctor who is willing to do some research to find out what is going on. Despite the enthusiasm of some folks here, there are metabolic conditions where it becomes impossible to lose weight even with a low calorie low carb diet. For example, Dr. Bernstein reports that women with PCOS can low carb all they want and cut calories but they often cannot lose weight without adding a drug, Metformin, that reduces insulin resistance. Potential problems might be anything from a problem with your pituitary, thyroid, or extreme insulin resistance. When you go to the doctor, bring your food logs so he/she can see what you've been eating. If the doctor just tells you to change your diet, find a new doctor, perhaps an endocrinologist. -- Jenny Cut the carbs to respond to my new email address! Something is very wrong wth Chris's the numbers, for sure. I think he must be eating way more than he thinks, and the scale is pegging at max. However, I would have also thought that he'd would have noticed some change in the way his clothes fit. So, either he's eating too much or has some metabolic issues. |
