Thanks! Do you think the first month I was walking I ever imagined I'd walk
8 miles a day? Not in my wildest dreams!

Also, I never did it all at once. I walked 2 or 3 times a day after my
meals. Since I started maintaining, I cut back to usually twice a day but
still do Pilates in the morning. It makes me feel good all day.

Canned vegetables are high in sodium

Yes, and I do eat those on occasion, I really need to switch to fresh,
steamed veggies. Yum! I LOVE those!

I use a de-juicer machine and juice six to ten different vegetables
and drink eight ounces of it twice a day.

I work in a large kitchen at a Christian college and since I began to
use my juicer machine I keep my eyes open for dicarded vegetable
parts.

The kitchen workers in the Salad Department always cut the pealings
off the cantaloupes and mellons. A fellow cook of mine (I am a cook)
was cutting the tops and bottoms off five hundred large green sweet
bell peppers and I asked them both for the peelings and pepper pieces
so I could juice them.

They throw away pounds of vegetable parts each day. Or they did.

I believe in the power of plants. I have read a few books on this
subject and they states that one can get most if not all of their
needed nutritional needs from plants.

I do eat fish a few times a week for its oil. (salmon)

I Fast a few times a month to give my body a break from digesting
solid foods. When I fast I just drink my vegetable juice and I have
yet to feel weak, tired or hungry. I do three 24 and one 48 hour fast
each month. It also helps me with my weight lost. ( I have about fifty
pounds I want to lose)

Monte

Good idea! I have a juicer, which I don't use often enough.

There is a lot of personal opinion about this.

Mine is this: Aim for about 50% calories from carbohydrate, 25% from
protein, 25% from fat.

? Target Sodium (mg)

YMMV. I have to keep my sodium intake high or my blood pressure gets
too low and I start fainting.

? Target Cholesterol (mg)

The way I understand it now, cholesterol consumption doesn't really
indicate anything that important.

It isn't the number of calories that matter -- it's really the
nutrients. As long as you're getting enough protein, and
phytochemicals from fruits and vegetables, AND you're doing some
decent amount of resistance training, 1200 calories (NET!!!) should be
okay, though you should always check with your doctor, of course.

Yes, it can take a "bit" to get into the habit of using it.
I work pretty hard and I am a bit tuckered out when I get back to my
room. I couldn't dejuice each evening as I didn't fee like it.

I read that once one de-juicing some vegetables/fruits the juice's
vitamins begin to fade from the juice rather quickly but it is the
"air" in the containers which make the juice lose it's vitamins.

So what I did, was go to the store and get some 12 ounce containers
with wide openings. (easier to pour into) and I make my juice twice or
three times a week and I fill the small container up to the top so
there isn't any air in them and then I put them into the
refrigerater.

Default I have a question...

Hi Debby,

Dr. Willette from Harvard says that worrying about % calories from
fat, carb, and proteins is missing the point. You have to consume
good fat, good carbs, and good proteins. The exact percentage is not
important - in fact you can have healthy diets with over 40% fat and
also ones with less than 10% fat. Going overboard with protein may
cause problems for people with kidney disease. So what are good fats,
good carbs, and good proteins? Good fats - unsaturated (olive,
peanut, corn, canola, oily fish) bad fats - saturated, trans fattry.
Good carbs - fruits, veggies (except white potatoes), and whole
grains. Bad carbs - refined grains, added sugars, white potatoes.
Good proteins - fish, veggie proteins (beans), white meat - bad
proteins - those with excess saturated fats. For weight loss you must
consume fewer calories than you burn. The type of calories is of
minor importance. For great nutrition advice see the Harvard website
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritio.../pyramids.html also
consider buying Dr. Willett's book

Oh, and I am currently walking a mile a day, working myself up.

Hi Debby!

I've been hanging around here just about a month and you'll find lots of
support and information - sometimes conflicting - be sure to do your own
research. I lost 97 pounds in a year by walking and eating around 1200
calories a day. I'm only 5 feet tall, so that recommendation for 2000
calories would not work for me. (see what I mean about conflict?)

It was the walking that kicked my metabolism into motion. I truly LOVE to
walk! I worked up to 8 miles a day. Get some good shoes - I went through

5
pairs in a year. I like to listen to music, so I have an mp3 player for
company.

Stay awhile and keep walking!

Like her, I also feel that my walking gave me more than calories, it
kicked my metabolism into the right gear as well.

Thanks Iggy. I know how much you like chickens :-)
