Default Coming back to LC since 1999

Hey guys,

I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. DoughBoy, call me Dough.
You'll see me around quite a bit. I've been lurking here for a while. I've
been fat all of my life (I don't use 'heavy' to describe it. I'm fat.). In
June of 1998 I decided to do something about it. At 316 pounds and barely
out of adolescence, I made the change to eating LC via the Atkins plan.
From June, 1998 till Feb 1999 I lost 108 pounds to a svelte 208. I was going
to the gym for an hour every morning doing cardio and lifting hard every
night...then I fell off the wagon in a bad way. Now, closing in on 360,
I've gone back to LC.

Over the last years, while putting the weight back on(and some), I've tried
to get control again, but I always lacked the will power, never getting past
a week with anything that I've tried (including the many 'tries' to get back
to the LC lifestyle). Its been 8 days and I'm feeling great. Finally over
the 1 week 'hump' and my body is starting to react(I did it for a long time,
I know what it feels like) and I'm psyched.

Well, I haven't told anyone that I've started trying to lose weight, but
last night my younger brother(a natural bodybuilder) told me that I'm losing
weight and he can see the 'water loss' around my eyes and in my cheeks. I
got the same rush that I used to get when people would see me after I lost
the 108 pounds the first time. I'm not sure how much(if any) I've lost and
I'm not going to weigh myself until after I get done with the first 2 weeks,
but it sure was nice.

I read the post from BigK about coming back and it hit home. Keep it up,
man. You'll get there.

Thanks for letting me begin to clutter this group.

-Dough

PS I've got some great recipes for you guys to try out.

Welcome Dough and good luck!!!!!!

I am also quite new and was allmost 360 when I started.

I think like most of us here that Low Carb is the way for us to do this and
loose weigt permanently.

Therefore I get a little discourage everytime I read that one person or
another fell off this and has to do it all over again.

I think that low carb takes my mind away from fast food and comfort food and
thats why I dont have had the same fell offs like I had on low-fat diets.

I think what I really want o ask you is: was it the low-carb woe that made
you fell off or was it personal?

I ask because I would like to address possible pitfalls to when I have to go
to maintenance in about a half or maybe a whole year.

You sound like you know what to do since you lost fantasticly the first time
on atkins and if you like to do lifting you will be able to loose well since
you will build muscles and increase your metabolisme.

You dont have to answer if you dont want too, but did you have any loose
skin the first time you lost weight? I am asking because I feeel saggy some
places now and still has a lot left to loose.

Once again good luck
Steffen

Thanks. I look forward to actually adding to the forum, rather than just
leaching from it. You've got some really great people in here.

Personal. Don't really wanna go into it, but lets just say I got depressed
and started eating ice cream, candy, etc (the old 'comfort food' bit), then
did nothing but eat fast food for lunch and huge portions for dinner. All
in all, I was just acting like a fat slob.

When I was working out, I was biking 20-25 miles a day or running for an
hour on a tread mill. I'm still very agile and 'atheltic'...I can do a full
russian split (legs out to the side) along with standing front and back
flips into a pool(while standing on the concrete at the side), I swim a
lot(a few times a week), but can't really do anything overly cardio or I
feel like I'm going to die. I suprise many with my speed/quickness/agility
for my size, however I remember 'how it was' when I was in shape and I miss
it. Once I get down some in weight, I'll go back to starting and doing some
'real' cardio, but for now my knees/back can't handle anything more than a
slow walk for a 1/2 hour.

To be honest with ya, not really. I was pretty young (late teen) when I did
it the first time, so I guess my skin was pretty elastic. I only had a
*slight* problem on my belly (I still had a little gut 6'0" tall, 208lbs),
but as time went by it was just going away on its own. The fact that I'm
still pretty young is a benefit too, and I hope I don't have too many
problems with sagging skin this time.

Thanks for the kind words.

I know the drill that is also why I ended up being 350+, but now I have
low-carb and feels like that I am in control and not my body :-).

Hope you will get the same feeling soon.

Sounds great, I think that it is a good thing that you worked out that much
and that you still are able to do these things. I recall to have read that
it is better to be overwitght and active than normal weigth and inactive.

Yeah same problem here before starting bycycling to work and starting in the
gym, but now I do much better. Was recently snowboarding and that was
fantastic since I was much more athletic and enjoyed it more because I was
able to control the board a lot better than before starting in the gym.

I am 25 now, and hopes that I also will benefit from young skin.

Thanks for the kind words.

You are very much welcome, keep up the good work and soon you will be
running and lifting like you used too.

Welcome to the group, Dough. There are some very knowledgeable
and supportive people here. They were instrumental in my
realizing what should have been obvious: this is a way of
eating--not a temporary diet.

Dough
I think I will get back on the wagon with you. We are probably only within
a few pounds
or each other and the same height. I lost about 75 pounds before but "I"
gained it
back. I overate and had a few problems. I am now going to try and
reorganize my life. Slender people dont realize it but being fat really has
a large(no pun intended)
on our everyday happiness.
I do a my own version of LC and find it easy to stay on with the except of
beer or alcohol. I usually quit having any while on the diet because the
alcohol slows me down. I dont drink that much so it should not be a
problem.
For a fat guy I too am pretty mobile. I need cardio work as well rehab on a
few
injuries before I can get really into working out. At 360 its tough to go
to a gym
but I am going to find a way to make myself go.
Do you follow the Atkins plan exactly?

Any suggestions would be helpful and I am sure from time to time I will
get a few recipes from you. My version of LC is tough and I dont
eat too many of the so called LC recipes. I try and stay as close to no
carbs
as I can but reward myself once a week or so with a LC recipe. I dont like
the
bars and too manny people say it slows them down. I have to watch my
quantity of nuts. They will stop my loss cold.
Welcome back and my name is frank but as a recent transplant

Good deal, Frank. It'll be nice to have other people, that are in almost
the same situation that I'm in, to be able to talk to instead of doing
completely on my own this time. I look forward to seeing eachother's
progress and lending support when it is needed.

I do a my own version of LC and find it easy to stay on with the except of
beer or alcohol. I usually quit having any while on the diet because the
alcohol slows me down. I dont drink that much so it should not be a
problem.

Yeah, being 24 myself, with all my friends going out to 'Monday Night
Football'(we're seeing how long the married ones can keep telling their
wives that they're still going out to watch football before they catch on),
hockey, baseball games(soon...), going out to the bars/clubs on weekends, I
understand how you feel. I just don't drink anything but water (carbonated
or 'regular'). I try to drink around 2 gallons a day, so while they're all
drinking beer, I'm drinking water.

With my water intake, I drink out of 1-liter bottles. I buy seltzer in
those bottles, then re-fill it with my 'filtered water system' water. I
find it easier to drink lots of water when they're in these bottles. The
containers aren't so little that drinking a lot is a hassle of filling and
re-filling glasses, but not so much as a gallon container where I get
discouraged and feel like I'll never get to the end.

Do you follow the Atkins plan exactly?

I've read the books and looked at the different theories and I'd like to
think that I follow the 'old school' version fairly well.

Lots of chicken and beef, some cheese. I don't really eat much pork (nor
have I ever). I try to stay as low as possible with the number of carbs I
take in and I drink as much water as I can stand. I don't eat seafoot
(don't like it), but I stay very low on the carbs. Some veggies (lettuce,
asparagus, spinach, etc), but very little carbs.

For example, today I'll eat:

Breakfast:
1.5-2 liters of water (easily drinking 1 1-liter bottle of water, then
drinking some more 'just because')
3 eggs over easy in a pan with a little butter (1/2 a pat)
4 slices of bacon

Snack:
celery (2 or 3 whole stalks, cut into bit size pieces) with some "Marie's
Chunky Blue Cheese" for dipping.

Lunch:
2 Chicken Breasts (bone in with skin, done on the grill sprinkled with
garlic powder, salt, pepper)
1 or 2 oz of Mozzarella
Some romaine lettuce with a little shaved pecorino romano and some ceasar's
dressing
2 liters of water

Dinner:
2 liters of water (or as much as I can drink
A good-sized sirloin pan-seared (Salt/Pepper, Garlic powder, Onion Powder,
Worcestershire sauce) to Rare.
5 or 6 steamed asparagus with a little butter and some salt.

Any suggestions would be helpful and I am sure from time to time I will
get a few recipes from you. My version of LC is tough and I dont
eat too many of the so called LC recipes. I try and stay as close to no
carbs
as I can but reward myself once a week or so with a LC recipe. I dont

like
the
bars and too manny people say it slows them down. I have to watch my
quantity of nuts. They will stop my loss cold.

For the most part, I stay away from everything pre-made. If I don't buy the
stuff myself and prepare it, I don't really trust it, nor do I eat it. I
don't eat the bars, the shakes, or any of the products out there that are
'low carb'. If I eat fast food, I'll stick to what I know worked in the
past(boston market chicken, salads with the meat from a few dry burgers,
stuff like that). Over the last 4 or 5 years since I've been in this
lifestyle, a lot of 'low carb' stuff has come out. IMO they are all
'cheats' and I won't eat them(wraps, breads, bars, shakes, candies, etc.).
Last time I did this (and now), I was pretty hardcore about not cheating and
I'm not messing with the success that I had.

Welcome back and my name is frank but as a recent transplant
from Alabama to SoCal I have just been called alabama my everyone.

Then I'll call you Alabama. Thanks for the welcome.

good luck

Thanks, but lets leave the luck to the people playing the lottery. Stay
focused on the task at hand and don't get discouraged and we're going to do
just fine. Whenever you find yourself wanted to reach for that sandwich,
ice cream, or pretzel; just think about how good it felt when you lost the
75# and how good it is going to feel when you get back down there. I'm here
for ya if you need anything and I'm sure all of these wonderful people are
too.
