Default Medical Kidney Book Says "Too Much Protein is Obsolete Belief"

"Coping with Kidney Disease: A 12-Step Treatment Program to Help You
Avoid Dialysis"
Mackenzie Walsen MD
2004
http://www.amazon.com/Coping-Kidney-...1714775&sr=8-1

Pages 25 and 26.....

....."The evidence supporting the idea that high protein intake damages
the kidney is unconvincing. The only experimental evidence supporting
this idea comes from studies done on rats, especially after removal of
one kidney and part of another. Rats develop renal failure almost
universally......"

He goes on to cite similar lack of findings of high protein intake
damage in other animals.

.....

...." From these observations it is clear that proetin restriction does
not prevent the decline of kidney function with age. In fact, reduced
protein intake appears to be its major cause."...

He goes on to state that protein malnutrition is too common in older
patients. And he concludes:

..."It seems safe to conclude that high dietary protein doesn not harm
the kidney in normal people."
