Which of these philosophies on weighing yourself do you agree with
I am a firm believer that success leaves clues so I must say something
in regards to something I have seen in my life that has worked. Most of the times in my life when I have lost a lot of weight I have done so by surprise being I did it when I had not stepped on a scale in a few weeks and realized I had lost 50 pounds. What I can not understand is this make sure you weigh every day mentality and here is why because I think I finally understand why it has never worked for me. Say you take a 110 pound woman and put her on a stage and take a man and hypnotize him and tell him that this woman weighs over 500 pounds assuming he is hypnotized he is not going to be able to pick her up. In other words, I am not someone who believes in weighing every day because a number is shoved in to your face every day to remind you that you are overweight and how hard it is going to be for you to loose weight. I think certain types of exercise are easier if you just do not pay attention to things that mess with your mind like ok lets go walking and not pay attention to the fact that you have walked a mile instead of actually trying to walk a mile. I want to know what your opinion is of doing everything right for a month and not weighing yourself is? |

I'm a believer in the philosophy of using paragraphs. *I'm not on the side of run-on sentences though, sorry. Well do you agree with weighing every day or do you agree with weighing every week or what? |

Well do you agree with weighing every day or do you agree with weighing every week or what? If you have an emotional problem with what you see on the scale after being on plan and not cheating, then you are weighing too often. Dieting is not supposed to be about self inflicted emotional trauma aimed at driving you back off your diet. If you weigh yourself more than once per day then you have an emotional problem with the scale and you are weighing too often. There are a few reasons for weighing more than once per day but they are about unemotional gathering of error bar statistics not about fat loss. I think the trend is to weigh weekly or less early on, then gradually build confidence and emotional detachment, then gradually switch to weighings more often than weekly during maintenance. So, once past emotional hurdles I prefer a daily weighing where the number is put into some averaging formula to see the trends. Average of the last 7 days works well. The reason for this is random water retention - No matter how much effort is put into battling water retention it never works so it's wasted effort. So learn your swing and use averaging to ignore it. One simple approach - During loss phases while on plan only note new lows. During maintenance while on place only note new highs and use those new highs to know when to go back to a losing phase. While off plan, focus on getting back on plan and use the scale however helps without emotional problems. |

I TOTALLY & STRONGLY DISAGREE with people who tell you not to weigh yourself frequently. How the hell are you supposed to know how well you are doing or how badly you screwed up if you don't weigh yourself every day? How often I weigh myself is a very strong indicator of how much I am mentally into losing weight. I weigh myself several times a day and so far I lost 23 pounds in 6 weeks. If I weigh myself infrequently, it shows that I am not really into losing weight very much. When I am like that, I don't lose weight. You have to be passionate to accomplish anything in life. Indifference doesn't accomplish anything. Frequent weighing shows a strong passion and dedication to losing weight! That's what it takes! Brian Tracy is the world's best success guru, and he says that whatever number you focus on and keep track off, the more you improve in that area of your life. So if you keep meticulous track of your weight and weigh yourself frequently, it will greatly help you to lose weight. Every day I write down in a text file the lowest weight I achieved that day. In my business, I also keep meticulous track of my sales every single day. And as a result my sales increase over time. These numbers are extremely important to me. It's important to know what's going on and what kind of behavior produces what kind of results. By seeing how fast or how slow I lose weight, I can see what kind of behavior on my part causes that. Also if I gain weight, the scale lets me realize immediately what I did wrong and how badly I screwed up. Basically if I eat any kind of high carb food, my weight goes up pretty fast, so I need to stay off those. I got a new electronic scale with big blue LED numbers on it. It's easier to read, more convenient, quicker, and more accurate than my old mechanical scale with the spring mechanism. It's very conducive to being used frequently, so I do use it much more frequently. I think it actually helps me lose weight by giving me so much quick & easy feedback. It really helps keep me on track. If I go off my diet a little bit, the scale will reflect that immediately so I know I need to cut back again and exercise some more and stick with the healthy foods. I think people who tell you not to use the scale every day are way off base and giving very bad advice. Feedback is extremely important. The more you have, the better. Having infrequent feedback is just a really stupid idea. Perhaps there are some weak-minded people who can't stand to be hit with reality. Well that just means that they are losers and they need to change their attitude to become winners. It doesn't mean that weighing yourself is a bad idea. If the number on the scale isn't going down, then it means you're doing something wrong and it's telling you that you need to do some different things and try harder, like eat healthier, cut out empty carbs, exercise more, drink more green tea, eat fewer calories. |
