Default OK, how about the 10 BEST foods!

Of course there is no such list, just as there is no worst list...but,
there are foods that almost nobody finds controversial. Here is my
list of the 10 best foods, along with why I think they are so good.

1) green beans: high protein, high fiber, low fat, low cal. 1 can (of
no-salt added gb's has 25 grams of fiber, 8 gms. protein, 70 calories,
and essentially no fat. As a percent of calories, the protein is very
high. They are inexpensive.

2) oatmeal: whole grain, nothing added except water in the rolling
process, high fiber (both soluble and insoluble kinds), good protein,
low cal, low fat, easy to prepare, cheap.

3) whole wheat bread: not "wheat bread" or contains "whole wheat"
which are misleading descriptions for breads with little whole wheat
and all the rest processed white flour. Whole grains are often
associated with longevity.

4) celery: boring, I know, but good fiber for the calories, very, very
low cal. and keeps your mouth busy. A staple diet food, cheap.

5-7) broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage: in no particular order... good
fiber for the calories, low cal.

8) tomatoes: good vit C, low cal, antioxidants.

9) potatoes: hey, an entire country (Ireland) seemed to survive on
these and almost nothing else for years during the great potato
famine. They even have adequate protein...provided you eat 13 pounds
of them a day. Cheap, easy, versatile.....but best all by
themselves....not fried, or anything added to them.

10) banana: good fiber, potassium, cheap.

I also like egg whites, not the yolk which is where all the fat is
located. An egg white has 15 cal, 3 gms. protein. It didn't make the
list because it is an animal based food thus eliminating it for
vegans. dkw

Nonsense, the whole field is disputed.

My list:

1. Eggs

2. Nuts

3. Berries

4. Offal (OK, so I don't always practice what I preach)

5. Coconut milk and oil

6. meat

7. fish

8. some fermented foods

9. supplements C, D3, multi, etc.

10. vegetables

Well, I like the berries. I eat a lot of cranberries and blueberries
especially. I'm vegetarian, so the vegetables are certainly on my
list as well. We would have different lists of course. Fish is
controversial because of mercury contamination, and lots of people
don't buy into fats and oils. Eggs are loaded with cholesterol....at
least the yolk and there is a recommendation to limit the amount you
eat because of this. Meat is far too general. Not many people
recommend you eat fatty pork or beef for example. I have no idea what
you mean by fermented food...beer and wine? saurkraut? bread? If you
eat properly, you don't need no stinkin supplements either. dkw

Mine would be:

1. Fruits and veggies (DUH!!!)

2. Almonds (not the type that's cooked in oils... but the dry ones...)

3. Low fat/Non fat milk cheeses, especially the Laughing Cow
spreadable cheese in garlics and chives. Only 35 calories of YUM per
wedge!!! :-P~~

4. Low fat milk/Silk Light (for those who are allergic to milk
proteins.)

5. Whole wheat breads/pastas/brown rice - Fiber, nuf said

6. Fish (not shellfish but finfish)

7. Chicken/Turkey - Low fat but plenty of protein.

8. Hummus - again, low cal... high in fiber

9. Egg whites - Very low cal... no cholesterol... if you cook it with
mushrooms, onion, leftover turkey meat from Thanksgiving and a light
coat of canola or olive oil and top it with some salsa... And
speaking of salsa...

10. Avocado - yeah, it's fatty, but in small doses, it's definitely
healthy... and it's healthy fats too -- raises the HDL (the good
cholesterol.) And who complains about gaucamole. Just a couple of
Tbsp and it's only about 50 calories of yummy topping to your egg
whites.

Well, I have one more... but it's obvious....

11. WATER!!! Cleans the system!!! Quenches thrist w/o adding
calories... and green tea (not the type with honey in it... but plain
green tea) and herbal teas are just as soothing and warming as any
Starbucks coffee! Also won't stick to most furniture when
spilled. :-)

I like your list. Never heard them called fin fish, but I like that
description. I still don't eat fish though. Hey, I LOVE that 8th
continent LIGHT chocolate soy. It tastes better than the choc. silk
IMO. It only has 90 cal per cup as well. Try that if you like
chocolate. Even my daughter and all her friends who have tried it like
it very much. dkw

Sure beats the 120 cal for a 8 oz cup of SIlk Light Chocolate. ;-)
I'll have to try it out and see if I like it.

Now if they have something less fattening on the Egg Nog thing...
*sigh* :-(
