Interesting. But most of the comments have to do with calories per serving,
not nutritional value. I think most of us know how to split with a friend,
order a half serving, order dressings and sauces on the side, etc.

Cheerios, Grape Nuts are grain-based foods. So is whole-wheat bread. I don't
see anything wrong with those. As usual FUD and fanaticism trumps logic and
reason. I agree on the other foods.

I do have a bias. -A bias against aflatoxin and acrylamide.

This list is something like the 100 best places to live list. Whether
you agree or not has to do with the criteria they use, which is often
only personal choice. Some of the best cities criteria is a
professional sports team and mass transportation. Really, I personally
would not care about either one of these. Other criteria like crime
per population seem much more important. Even the availablility of
jobs though seems a bit unimportant unless you are looking for work.
If your work brings you to the city, heck, you aleady have a job.
Actually, I would not want to live in any of their recommendations
because they are all too large.

With food, it is kind of the same thing. If you are underweight, the
high caloric content might be a plus. The list does work for me since
I eat almost none of the 20, but I am very weight and health
conscious. Far as I know, the only healthy food McD's sells is their
side salad and it is often pretty old looking with shrivelled up
tomatoes. Talk about calories, Subway sells a 12-inch meatball
sandwich that is absolutley loaded with calories and fat. Of course
they sell a couple of healthier alternatives, so I'll cut them a
little slack. McD or BurgerKing and that ilk though, seem to offer
very little but high-fat, high caloric food. Far as I know, there
isn't anyone out there recommending lots of cholesterol in your diet,
and that is a big part of fast food...even pizza with all that cheese.
When someone does occasionally defend pizza, they show a small slice
of vegetarian pizza on whole wheat crust. Where the heck you find
something like that is beyond me. dkw

Actually any non-chain progressive pizza place will offer you organic
whole-what pizza.

Sounds good, but we are a city of 50,000 and we don't have any such
place here. We have about 75 Mexican restaurants, 5 McDonalds and many
other pizza franchises though, all serving essentially the same thing.
This is not a very health-conscious town on the whole, but I just work
around that. I go to Cicis and Gattis pizza restaurants and McDs but
never eat anything but their salads which are pretty good. Often I am
the only one there within what appears to be a healthy weight range.
Now you go just a few miles farther north into Austin and the populace
seems to thin down a tad. That may be demographics based on economics
or something like that though. Bet they have whole-wheat pizza in
Austin. dkw

Everything there is unhealthy mostly because of portions. Our views
are soooo distorted anymore. My grandma told me that when the big mac
came out it was supposed to be this HUGE manly-type sandwich. Want to
know how many my male friend can put away in one sitting? Three, plus
a large fries and probably more than a liter of soda with all the
refills he gets. We are distorted about our own bodies too. I am a
couple pounds overweight and I get called "thin." It's insanity.

Exactly. Many people call me thin, yet I am within my medical range
for weight...136 lbs at 5'8". Of course Americans think most of Asia
is underweight. Overweight becomes relative apparently, which can lead
to an acceptance and the condition becomes normal. To ancients who had
to really work for food, we would all look plump probably.

Restaurants serve what people want and many people crave large
portions, high-fat, high-salt, high-sugar foods. Cheap and fast helps
them complete the "service".

People just need to realize that their bodies lie to them. They are
told by nature to seek out lots of calories and high fat because
eating quick and large is a survival instinct even though we don't
need it any more. Understanding there is often no good correlation
between food desires and food needs is the first step. Often, those
people who live to eat will need to find a different preoccupation to
try and direct their interests elsewhere, but it is obviously very
difficult for many people. dkw
