Debbie,

When I joined WW, I didn't pay a registration fee because I bought a block of
weeks. There were different prices for health plans, but they never checked
any insurance cards. Being a Massachusetts' teacher, I joined at a rate of
$110 for 12 pre-paid coupons. That week, they weighed me, gave me the week 1
materials (sliding scale, week 1 book, etc.) and then I listened to a meeting.
There are no other charges, unless of course you would like to buy food
products, recipe books, etc., which is completely optional.

Can anyone tell me what other charges there are when you first join
(registration is free right now)? I know you get the books and points slide
thingie -- is there something else you get? I'm in VA if that makes a
difference.

Thanks for the help!

Debbie

Thanks Sue. Does the Week 1 book have the info on Flex Points? I got some
books from a friend years ago that had points for regular foods and
restaurants and the slide (which I've since lost).

Do you get a book each week? Does it have helpful hints in it? I'm just
trying to decide if should join for a week and get all the materials and
then come here or keep going for to meetings for extra hints and help and
stuff. I wouldn't buy foods or recipes.

Debbie,

The week one materials include the plan, slide and a book with a list of
point values for foods. The subsequent weeks are helpful hints, etc. This
is what I have received so far on the Flex Points program

Week 1 - Getting Started Book (program and list of point values for foods)
and Point Finder slider
Week 2 - QuickPic (explains about sizes of foods for servings i.e.: a
cassette tape for a serving of meat, a tennis ball for a cup)
Week 3 - Be Active (about activity and how to earn additional points) and
Points Booster slider
Week 4 - Baking/Cooking with Points (ingredient substitutions and common
cooking ingredients so you can convert favorite recipes to points)
Week 5 - Workout of the Abdomen (some exercises you could use)

That is all I have received so far on the new program.

Hope this helps you a bit, there are 7 more weeks of materials. I am a firm
believer in attending meetings for the interaction with the meeting group
for ideas, just like you get here. I also don't have a scale at home to
weigh myself, so this gives me accountability weighing in each week.

You pay weekly or can get a discount by buying 10 coupons.

The materials are given out each week. The MAIN info is in that first
week's packet. After that the materials vary, from hints, exercise,
recipes, etc.

You can purchase a larger Journal, books with lots of foods and their
points, restaurant points. And you can buy their snack bars, scales,
other products.

I was wondering if the accountability would really help me. I'm just such a
tightwad, I don't want to pay if I don't have to. I was hoping I could pay
for the first week and then come in here and chat with everybody to stay on
course. It's like having a meeting with the best-of-the-best. ;-)

Here's hoping the WW gods don't read this NG. LOL.

Hi Fred,

Hope all is well with you today.

....And thanks for the info. That was my real question. I don't want to pay
for more than necessary. I've lost (total) around 45 pds. with just the
books and this ng. I've since gained about 10 pds. back. I'm just thinking
if I can do this good with the books and the info I get from you-all, what
more can the meetings do for me? But I am a little shy and don't really
like group meetings. I also don't see the point in doing this online when I
have this group to come to.

I haven't gotten to know everybody real good yet, so excuse me if this is
insulting; but do you go to group meetings every week and does it really
improve the difference in your weight loss?

I did see the post where you lost your Dad (sorry), and quite a few posts
where you've given several people a Congrats!!! on their weight loss, so I
know you're into this ~and~ a nice guy.

going through the same.

I gather some folks need the meetings for accountability or honesty or
group support or hints. You do not have to talk at meetings if you do
not want to.

I do go to meetings. Frankly, I don't know how it would work or
rather would have worked without them since I have been attending
regularly since end of last October. I have lost weight before
another way but did regain but it was not WW. WW has taught me about
portion control, if not anything else. But there are others here who
have never attended meetings and are doing quite well. Maybe if I had
had the info separately and really read through it, it would not be
necessary to attend. I'm now Maintaining and still attend. Support
for Maintenance is a bit more hit and miss but all the elements needed
to eat properly are still there and just reemphasized. The meetings
do get a bit repetitious.

I did see the post where you lost your Dad (sorry), and quite a few posts
where you've given several people a Congrats!!! on their weight loss, so I
know you're into this ~and~ a nice guy.

Thanks. I think I'm a reasonable person and sometimes nice (G)

I went to meetings for the first 12 weeks and now I am doing it on my own.
Money is tight right now and I figured paying for Curves was better than
paying for WW meetings. As for accountability, the weight and exercise
challenges help in that department. So does this newsgroup.

Debbie:
To answer this question and another one you posted ... here is my
two cents. I am also in Virginia, on the Peninsula. I've never
heard anyone talk about special rates for insurance policies
here. I am now Lifetime, but I think the individual cost is $11
per week, while the plan of ten tickets is $89 or so.

The first meeting includes the info you listed. Then you will
receive some material each week, alternating books and recipe
cards. Yes, WW in the USA is now using the Flex Points. That is a
system for tracking and counting. The points for each food item
are still about the same. If you want information about specific
restaurants, you need to buy a special book.

If you are near my area, you are welcome to email me for more
information about the center I attend. It has about 9 meetings a
week. Tomorrow I'll go for weigh in. HTH.
