Questions about the side effects of low carbing
Hi, I'm new to low carbing and while i'm very ,very pleased with how well it works in terms of supressing my appetite I find that I'm having a few less than desirable side effects. The side effects are a Very dry mouth with a coated tounge and not exactly the freshest breath. Also my lips feel dry and the corners of my mouth hurt.To be frank, my urine Doesn't smell to great either.I am also very tired . Are these common side effects? How long do they tend to last and is there anything I can do to combat them? Thanks, Liz |

This is a normal effect of a low carb diet, but some people will cut back on their protein intake somewhat. This usually supresses the bad breath and urine smell. As far as being tired, your body is going through a change right now and is "learning" how to use fat for energy rather than carbs. This is also a known side effect for most people and should subside in a few days. Chris |

Hi, I'm new to low carbing and while i'm very ,very pleased with how Hi Liz, welcome to the group! well it works in terms of supressing my appetite I find that I'm having a few less than desirable side effects. I already have dry mouth from medications, but I didn't notice that it got any worse during induction. You are probably experiencing some side effects from ketosis. You might need to cut down your protein intake a little and up the veggies. The tiredness should pass soon -- then you'll notice a distinct INCREASE in energy levels. -- Saffire 205/158/125 - 5'2.5" Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |

The good news about that is, it encourages you to drink lots and lots of water. A result of drinking all that water is that your urine isn't very concentrated. Heck, there are some days that the water in my toilet barely changes color. You could try Listerine strips or some other brand for the bad taste in your mouth. I keep chapstick in every room of the house, and in my jacket pockets. Hope some of this is helpful to you. Carol Body Mint!!! This was a new product when I first started LC'ing in 1999. It sure worked! The label calls for one tablet twice a day. I found one tablet daily did the job. This stuff is great. And, no, I'm not affiliated in any way. Google will turn up more info. Thanks, Liz Drink water steadily throughout the day - so that you (a) need to pee at least once an hour, and (b) your pee is clear (ie, not yellow). Then see how many of the symptoms clear up. If you are still getting these symptoms/effects despite adequate water, check with your doc. -- Succorso |

Maybe more vitamins?? Tiredness usually goes away after a couple of days I
think. I use carb free gum for the breath problem.
