Default good and bad this morning

Ack. Despite my precautions, the germy cashier at the pet store
managed to give me a cold. The main problem with that is for many
years, one of my main strategies has been to suck on
zinc-echinacea lozenges almost constantly, and those contain 3 g
carbs each. (This is in addition to Zicam--and I think they swabs
may be less effective than the yucky spray.) How many of those do
I dare use per day, and what will the effect be????

On the other hand, I was pleased to see that I have dropped
another two pounds. That brings me to 15 pounds lost. I suppose
I will dance around this point for some time now, since that seems
to be my pattern. Anyway, it was encouraging to see that on the
scales....

I was sick recently and I used the full sugar cough drops of my choice. I
did not limit myself to a certain number per day, I chose to risk the extra
carbs in exchange for not contstantly coughing. I didn't gain anything,
probably because my appetite was reduced from being sick so I didn't eat as
much as usual.

Luna and Jean B,

I had the exact same thing happen my first 2 weeks on atkins. So here I am
doing induction and a get a really awful cold. The sore throat was so bad I
used the full-sugar Hall's cough drops, up to 5 or more a day. And I still
lost about 8 pounds during induction. I also thought that I didn't eat as
much due to the cold, so that probably made up for it. Then again, I didn't
exercise much either. I guess I"m not afraid of cough drops anymore and
would probably use them again if I absolutely had to.

I hope you feel better soon Jean,

I did go out to see whether there were any zinc (and maybe
echinacea) lozenges that would be better, and there weren't. So,
I am using the lozenges, sort-of restricting them. I shouldn't
cut back on them, because they seem to work best if I use them
practically constantly.

I did look for LC versions of the soup I tend to eat when I am
sick (and at no other time). Tomato soup is pretty high in carbs
(and most at the normal stores contains high-fructose corn syrup);
mushroom soup is better. I was thinking I might make a tomato
coup clone, but that would still be pretty carby. I think I may
put together something like a Tom Yum--or maybe I will work on a
hot and sour soup that is just unthickened broth and egg. (I am
too lazy to deal with the wood ears and golden needles right now.)

Thanks. I am still hoping that the Zicam etc. will make this
pretty minimal. I will say that I'm NOT going to eat noodles, ice
cream, etc. though. My lozenges are quite carby enough.

Poor Jean! Colds are the pits! Sorry to hear you are under the
weather. How is the soup search coming along? I have always believed
in the powers of echinacea as well. I also got a major shock when I
discovered the calcium supplements I have been taking for 3 years now
have 4 carbs each, and I ate 3 a day. No way am I giving up 12 carbs
for supplements. Luckily, he pharmacist gave me something else. At
least you only need the lozenges when you are sick! Get well soon
Blessings to all,
Jeano

Thanks, Karen! It seems so slow compared to some of the folks
here, so it is really nice to hear that.

I am happy to see that in spite of all my cold lozenges yesterday,
I am still at the low I recorded yesterday morning.
Unfortunately, so far those lozenges and Zicam have not fended off
this cold. Now I can only hope it is not horrendously severe and
that it will be short-lived.

I consumed LOTS of lozenges yesterday. I am VERY lucky I am still
at my low point weightwise, since that added up to lots of carbs.
Also, I do take many vitamins, and I'm sure most of them are
carby. I have not given those up, and, in fact, I sometimes think
that is one reason why I am losing slowly. That is a choice I
make though.
