Default Family party coming up (need recipe help!)

We just started thinking about DD's 1st birthday party, which will be next
month. DH & I decided to have a "proper" party because he has his birthday 3
days after DD's and there will be a lot of people. He wants to do a lunch
party, which means lots of food.

Now, we already agreed that on the real date of DD's birth (we have to do
the party on Sunday) we will probably go on a one day trip and have
lunch/dinner with a small cake there. Then, there will be this party at
home... I am already starting to worry about that a little. I *know* I will
try DD's cake on her birthday (as we will be eating out, I will *try* to
choose sensibly the other courses, though), and I *know* I will try the
other cake we will have on this party at home. We will order the cake, which
means that the cake will be carby (I'm in Italy and the low carb diets and
variations aren't so big here as they are in the States).

So, my problem is - I want to plan the rest of the dishes (it will probably
be a buffet lunch - something I can make one day ahead, I don't want to be
"slaving" in the kitchen on the day of the party, I just want to put some
good food on the table and enjoy myself like everyone else g) in order to
make them more appropriate for my WOE.

So far we've come up with this:
-prosciutto, goat cheese ("pecorino"), baccala (codfish mousse), olives,
pickles, etc. Different types of bread (black, whole wheat, white, corn).
- then, as DH said he wanted to have roast pork (it's what his college
friends love) and some side dishes, I was thinking about potato salad and
French salad (for his friends, mainly), traditional bean salad with Italian
dressing, salad "caprese" (mozzarella/tomato/pesto alla genovese), and cold
whole wheat pasta salad (with Feta cheese, tomatoes, green and black olives,
green, red and yellow peppers, dressed with some really good olive oil and
balsamic vinegar).
All this can be made ahead, the recipes I have are really good, plus they
are allowed on my WOE.
- there will probably be two types of desserts + the cake which we will
order. This is where the problem lies. I don't have any recipes for low carb
cookies or desserts other than cheesecakes. Anything you can suggest? It
will be ok for my WOE as long as it is made with whole wheat flour/almond
flour and Splenda. No bananas, though.
Can you help? How does the rest of the planned menu sound?

Elly

What's wrong with cheesecake? It's delicious!

Does it really have to be a *cake*? I'm sure you could find some low carb
version of custard cake or the like. Likewise, tiramissu should be possible
to do in low carb version. Or you could prepare a crumble (with crunched
nuts+butter+ a little whole wheat for the crust), with red berries it should
remain pretty low in carb, you can even add some whipped cream. Most
chocolat fondant cakes also require very little or no flour at all and
should fit your WOE if you manage to do it with unsweetened chocolate and
Splenda. Speaking of chocolate, homemade chocolate mousse (or cream) is
worth any cake too...

I agree But then, I'm in Italy and most of my friends are Italian, and
cheesecake isn't something that's so popular here as it is in the States. I
actually never made it before I started (moderate) low carbing and found
some recipes for it online... I'm not saying cheesecake won't be appreciated
amongst our guests, I just think that they might wonder about my dessert
choice...

Yes, tiramisu has a low carb potential if you use whole wheat biscotti
instead of the regular ones and use Splenda. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to
any amount of coffee, even the smallest amounts used for desserts (ended up
for coffeine overdose twice in the E.R. 8 years ago - it manifested itself
as a poisoning, with hours of vomiting, low BP and blackouts. Even the decaf
makes me sick, so I just don't use coffee anymore).

Do you have any recipes for those (crumble, chocolate fondant cake and
homemade chocolate mousse)? They sound wonderfully yummy :-)

Thank you for all the suggestions!

I'm not American, yet I love cheesecake, it's *exotic* Though I must
confess I prefer the English version to the one from New York. Desserts are
probably the best part of the American cuisine...

Ouch I'm not a big fan of coffe myself, but at least it doesn't kill me!
You could try a chocolate (or does decaff cause allergies for you?) version
without coffee, but Italians might objects, they tend to be a little
obsessive about coffee...

I'm sorry, I don't have recipes for these at the moment, I usually make an
online search and pick the ones that feels the yummiest

Linda's site is an excellent resource for LC recipes. I've made many
of her selections and they've all turned out quite well.
