http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080206/...e/obesity_cost The question is "who" is going to pay for the health care. If you get seriously ill when you are working, most likely it's your employer and your group insurance that will foot a lot of the care. On the other hand, if you are older when you get sick, and let's face it we ALL get sick and die of something), then it is likely that Medicare (the govt.) will pay a larger portion of the bill, as health care is now set up. There are other factors though. If the govt would decide to provide some level of universal health care and that health care provided fewer benefits than the work's group insurance, then there might not be a higher total bill if you live longer. For example, there are lots of way to treat cancer. Most likely, if the govt provides universal care, they will simply not allow bone marrow transplants and any heroic measures. You are getting a level of care afterall if you have terminal cancer, but are provided (only) palliative treatment, vs. the scads of testing and more experimental treatment that some presently allows. It does appear that as people live longer, those chronic diseases will kick in. Presently, it can be very expensive to treat diabetes, heart disease, etc. for a longer period. Now if there is a high co-payment in any plan, it will be the individual that pays a larger portion of the total bill. My guess is that we will wind up with a balance of govt. private and individual payment that pleases nobody, which is pretty much where we already are. I agree it can be a lot more fair and better than it is now, but assume the govt will as usual, make things worse for me personally in the next few years. dkw |
