Dreamlands Pasta
Can Dreamlands pasta be classified as low-carb? I am not familiar with
the term 'net digestible carbs'. Thanks Roger |

It's Dreamfields... and they "invented" the term net digestible carbs.
You can read about it on their website. http://www.dreamfieldsfoods.com/ Jennifer Roger V. LaPlante wrote: Can Dreamlands pasta be classified as low-carb? I am not familiar with the term 'net digestible carbs'. Thanks Roger |

Here's a quote from the company FAQ: -------QUOTE STARTS HERE---------- How does Dreamfields make its pasta lower in carbohydrates? DREAMFIELDS pasta is lower in digestible carbohydrates. What that means is that while the total number of carbohydrates is the same as typical pasta, our unique blend of dietary fibers and proteins protects all but about 5 grams of these carbohydrates from being digested. These protected, or "controlled," carbohydrates pass to the colon where they provide the health benefits of fiber. -------QUOTE ENDS HERE---------- -- --- Jim Marnott Originally: 245/193/180 Now: 221/216/180 |

Well... I can tell you that on the diabetes lists, some diabetics
(myself included) have found no blood glucose rise after eating this pasta. Regular pasta would cause a LARGE rise. Others, have found a rise. So the juries out. Jennifer Jim Marnott wrote: Roger V. "Roger V. LaPlante" wrote in message ... Can Dreamlands pasta be classified as low-carb? I am not familiar with the term 'net digestible carbs'. Thanks Roger This pasta shows a somewhat delayed and reduced blood sugar effect, and thus may be useful to diabetics, but a high proportion of the total caloric content of the pasta is in fact absorbed, so I personally do not consider it low carb. Same situation as for sugar alcohols. Although they partially pass to the colon for digestion via fermentation, you still absorb most of the sugar and must produce insulin to utilize it. Note that fiber, in comparison, is not digested, fermented, or absorbed. Therefore I regard the Dreamfields claims as blatent false advertising. Alan |

And as a non-diabetic, I don't experience bloating, water retention or
hunger pangs in a few hours like I do if I eat something truly high-carb like a normal pasta would be. So for me, it's working just fine too. Like Jennifer said, it's going to be an individual thing. You can only try it and see how it works for you. on Mon, 23 Aug 2004 21:22:06 -0700, Jennifer wrote: Well... I'm not certain what they've done to this pasta, but I know that it doesn't
affect my blood glucose the way that regular pasta does. It tastes great, and cooks up very nicely. I am fortunate in that I don't crave pasta like some people do, but it's nice to be able to make an occasional "one pot meal" (kind of like a Hamburger Helper) or macaroni and cheese and use Dreamfields pasta to make it more low carb. I hope the Dreamfields pasta folks get obscenely rich selling their technology to the other pasta companies. DebH "Roger V. LaPlante" wrote in message ...
