Default Comments on South Beach diet?

I am a 49 yr old guy who is just at 180pds. For 10+ years I ran and biked
and of course this kept the weight off. In my 30's and early 40's I weighed
between 160-170pds and even weighed around 155-157 when running a lot. Now
at almost 50yrs old I want to return to about 165pds ( loss of 15pds) which
would leave me at what I believe to be a good healthy weight.

I just bought the book "South Beach diet" because I believe in balanced
nutrition with meat, carbs, vegtables and fats. Does anyone have personal
stories regarding their own health and weight loss benefits? Any advise?

Please either post here or email me at

Thanks all..........

Rick,

There have been quite a few posts in the past couple months (maybe
within the past few weeks), about the south beach diet (also called
SBD for short).

I haven't read the book yet. But here is my opinion of it from the
posts I've read.

1. Fad diet that got a bunch of publicity on Dateline and other news
shows lately. (pay the news enough and they will advertise for you -
good marketing technique)

2. Some posters have complained that the book is too complicated and
vague to truely understand if you are doing the diet correctly or not.

3. Some posters who have paid for the online service have been
EXTREMELY unhappy with the results and the customer service and the
website, etc.

Those 3 things combined spell out that this is a fad diet .... Maybe
there is some validity in the bottom line. Eat the way they say and
lose weight. But the outside of the box looks like a total gimmick
if you know what I mean. A total waste of money out of your wallet.

You can learn all the information that you need here. And better yet
- Its FREE!!! Doesn't cost you a penny. You just have to be
intelligent enough to take what you need, and cypher out some crap.

Then again - if you go for the program and pay the $$, you'd have to
do the same thing - be intelligent enough to take what works for you
and cypher out the rest of the crap. But - why pay if you can get
it for free?

That being said. Like others have posted - what are you doing for
exercise now? Also, how/what were you eating before?

In all seriousness - for people who need to lose less 20lbs, that can
easily be accomplished but looking at their current eating habits and
see whats wrong.

Simple suggestions that can easily cut out some unneccessary calories.
1. if you drink coffee w/ cream and sugar - switch to a sugar
substitute and cut down the amount you use. And switch to one of the
fat free nondairy creamers too.
2. If you drink soda - switch to diet.
3. Foods that have white flour, lots of sugar, potatoe, starchy
foods, etc. Cut back on all of those.

Yes I do bike now, about 12-15 miles, 3 times a week (an hour of exercise)
but can't run anymore because of knee surgeries and cartilage removal. I'd
be asking for severe arthritis later if I beat my knees up more............

What kind of physical therapy are you doing for your knees since the
surgeries? And consider talkign to your doc or PT about a workout program
you can do.

Do you have access to a pool (for swimming)?

Seriously - you should find a form of exercise that you can do. Biking is
great, but if you are only going 12 - 15mph, you probably aren't pushing
yourself very hard. And withthat, you aren't burning that many calories.
At 49, and a history of athletic activity, you should aim for 19 - 22mph
when biking. (unless you are physically unfit for that kind of activity).

I'm female, 32, 5'3" weight 125 - 130ish and I bike myself. The "slow,
leisure" rides I do are 12 - 15mph. (and mind you, i ride a mountain bike
on the streets, its geared towards mountains and has big nobby tires, which
also means more resistance and more work to go faster because of the gearing
ratio). On my hard biking days I go 18+
