Hi Debby,

Dr. Willette from Harvard says that worrying about % calories from
fat, carb, and proteins is missing the point. You have to consume
good fat, good carbs, and good proteins. The exact percentage is not
important - in fact you can have healthy diets with over 40% fat and
also ones with less than 10% fat. Going overboard with protein may
cause problems for people with kidney disease. So what are good fats,
good carbs, and good proteins? Good fats - unsaturated (olive,
peanut, corn, canola, oily fish) bad fats - saturated, trans fattry.
Good carbs - fruits, veggies (except white potatoes), and whole
grains. Bad carbs - refined grains, added sugars, white potatoes.
Good proteins - fish, veggie proteins (beans), white meat - bad
proteins - those with excess saturated fats. For weight loss you must
consume fewer calories than you burn. The type of calories is of
minor importance. For great nutrition advice see the Harvard website
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritio.../pyramids.html also
consider buying Dr. Willett's book

I am currently taking in about 1200 a day.
Please help me to gigure out what my target percentages should be

these
other categories.

? % Calories from Fat
? % Calories from Carbs
? % Calories from Protein
? Target Sodium (mg)
? Target Cholesterol (mg)

Thanks!!
Oh, and I am currently walking a mile a day, working myself up.

Hi Debby!

I've been hanging around here just about a month and you'll find lots

of
support and information - sometimes conflicting - be sure to do your

own
research. I lost 97 pounds in a year by walking and eating around

1200
calories a day. I'm only 5 feet tall, so that recommendation for 2000
calories would not work for me. (see what I mean about conflict?)

It was the walking that kicked my metabolism into motion. I truly

LOVE to
walk! I worked up to 8 miles a day. Get some good shoes - I went

through
5
pairs in a year. I like to listen to music, so I have an mp3 player

for
company.

Stay awhile and keep walking!

Impressive!! That's a huge amount of weight to lose! I don't think I

could
ever get myself to walk 8 miles a day, but, then again, I don't love to

walk
like you do. I will definitely be here for awhile, I have another 30

lbs.
to lose. I really appreciate this group, and I appreciate the wide

array of
opinions shared here!
