Hi.

I recently took advice from people here about cutting cheese down and
counting ALL carbs. I used to just have "reasonable" amounts of cheese,
peanut butter etc. But now I use fitday.com and it really helps you learn
what you can eat, and how much of it. I was expecting it to take ages to
enter the foods, but when you have done a few or set some up for yourself
its just a few clicks away.

My weight was going up last week, but I took advice from people here
(including Anette) and my weight is coming down now.

Thanks everyone :-)

You're eating too much cheese. Check carb count of everything ! coffee has
carbs, so does milk, cheeses, peanut butter, all the veggies/salads not to
mention fruits!
ditch the fruit, cut most of the cheese and eat some MEAT !

I'm still keeping an eye on you :-)
You might be a bit low on calories, but as long as you're not starving
yourself or anything, you're doing great!

How is your partner doing?

Hi.

No, I'm not starving :-)
We are both doing well. After we started using fitday both our weight is
coming down.

I have noticed that my calories are sometimes low, but I feel ok. I think
Traceys are low as well:

We dont want to go so low that our bodies dont want to lose weight.

Regards,
Ian (and Tracey)

An average of 1300 calories for someone who weighs 300ish seems excessively
LOW! At the recommended 10 times your weight - that would be 3000 calories
per day. Even at 8X that would be 2400 calories. My recommendation would
be to eat MORE. Healthy fats and proteins will help add on to the calorie
count. IMHO as always!

Depends on which of the options you listed. It could be up to around
1000 calories of cheese, and mayo, which at your starting weight doesn't
leave a whole lot for food, without going too high to lose. Most folks
lose reasonably easier at 10 to 12 times their weight in daily calories.
Some, myself included, needed to drop to 8 to 10 times weight in calories
to lose (though I can maintain at 14 to 16).

Atkins is not magic, and people with less than 40 or 50 pounds to lose,
especially short women, usually need to keep an eye on total calories.
Cheese adds up fast, at about 100 calories per ounce. Very low carbs
and too much dietary fat just means your body doesn't need to burn any
fat for fuel.

This is *not* to say to try to do low-fat as well as low carb, just keep
an eye on excessive cheese, cream and possibly mayo. You might want
to track total calories at www.fitday.com (I preferred an index card).

Fitday's figures for exercise calories burned are known to be very
overestimated, though, so don't put much stock in that part of the site.

I agree with the post suggesting Ellyn just follow the Atkins plan per
the book. She's drinking coffee with milk, adding fruit, etc all in
less than a month, then wondering why she isn't losing.

Milk?
cottage cheese?
fruit?
coffee?

These are not foods that are permitted on Atkins in the beginning. You should
be at 20 carbs a day for 2 weeks. Then add 5 g increments every week too find
your ccl. Milk has sugar, fruit has sugar, cottage cheese is high carb (maybe
in maintance), coffee......has at least 1 carb per 6 oz. Yoou are not supposed
to have more than 4 oz. of HARD, full fat cheese a day.

Read the book..........you are NOT doing Atkins.

In article , Edelman
writes
Large Starbucks coffee with 1/4 cup whole milk and 2 equal

Milk? No.
Breakfast - 2 oz of smoked salmon and 1/2 cucumber and l Tablespoon cream
cheese

A half cucumber?

Lunch - 3oz tuna/T mayonnaise or 2 to 3 oz cheese and 3 cups lettuce and
1 to 2 T olive oil/T vinegar
-Snack 1/2 cup cottage cheese/l fruit or 2 cup cooked vegetables/1 oz cheese

A lot of cheese over the day.

Dinner 4 to 5 oz chicken or fish/Tablespoon mayo and 3 cups salad with T
oil/T vinegar and 2 cups cooked vegetable
Late night snack - 1/2 cup cottage cheese or 1 oz cheese or 2 T peanut
butter and 1 fruit if I did not have it earlier

More cheese?

This isn't really Atkins, which explains why you haven't been losing.
On induction you are only allowed 2 oz cheese, and it can't be cottage
cheese, and you aren't allowed milk in most phases of the diet.

This is way too much milk and cottage cheese - both are quite carby -
and too much cheese in general, hence at your weight too many calories.

I would drop all the dairy - milk, cream and cheese - and replace with
meat, fish, salad dressed with olive oil, and eggs. If you are getting
cravings for it - and the amount of it you are eating suggests you are -
then it's a sign you need to cut it out to lose the craving. If you
must keep something, have cream in coffee.

Count calories using FitDay or similar - you are waaaay over by my
estimate and I'm about your weight - to lose my last ten lb I've had to
go to 8x bodyweight, which since I'm 141 is 1128 a day. Are you
drinking 2 pints of water a day? Don't drink much more, but certainly
not less.

Hi.

She's finding it very hard to get anywhere near the 2400+ calories she
needs, and during the last few days she's not been feeling to well with a
cold. Looks like the weight has gone up as well. What type of food will
increase her calories by a large amount, taking into account she has a small
appetite? And cant really afford lots of meat? All I can think off is
checken legs.

Thanks,
Ian and Tracey.

Have salads with lots and lots of healthful olive oil. That'll rack up the
calories very quickly. Cream also has a lot of calories.

Best wishes,
