Default over 60? Not Overweight, Newly diagnosed diabetics

hi...

i have posted her on and off over the years.
i have alternated betweenlow-fat & low carb ways of eating.

i exercise...really 3x a week i'm in the pool. one day a week i
volunteer and spend at least an hour running around in there delivering
flowers and i go shopping once a week where i wind up walking super
walmart for a couple of hours. (by that i mean i wind up having to go
back to the other endof the store repeatedly for something i forgot.)

my BMI is 23 or 24, i forget as its ok ..i eat fairly healthy but liked
sweet stuff too.

i was diagnosed 3 weeks ago. my sugar was 1 pint over normal & i was
reporting being exhausted. no other symptoms

over 3 weeks they had me come in for testing.
the 3rd time ws drinking the sugary stuff which i kinda thought tasted
good but was too cold.

i made an appt to come back in for results. i had been preparing for the
wost & was a nervous wreck but in my heart i knew i couldnt be.

well, i am. they caught me very early. i do 1 bg in the morning & take 2
glucophage a day. my 14 day average for readings is 103.

i am now doing a version of south beach. i havent been in for diabets
education class yet. that is this saturday

my neighbor is 72. thin. walks & gardens everyday. eats right. he was
diagnosed 3 months ago. he cant believe it either.

we spoke the other day...we each had 1 diabetic sib.

i don't this sounds ridiculous but i didnt think i would get it. my
brother and other sister didnt. there are no g-parents, uncles, cousins,
aunts who have it & they all lived long lives. into their 80's & my
grandmother over 100. ok..i'm still stunned.

the thing is..i'm surprised at the number of people who are taking care
of themselves and it isnt seeming to matter.

i don't get it. i guess i figured i would escape it if i took care.

Fairly healthy? Does that include Big Macs, fries, cake and pies? ;-)

I can't help but ask... how do you know what the old fella eats?

I just recently read somewhere that it's lifestyle (and weight) more than
genetics as to who develops diabetes.

the thing is..i'm surprised at the number of people who are taking care

There are always exceptions.......

How did you take care? Are you active and of average weight? Do you eat a
lot of carby foods every day? Some people live on carbs. Eventually the
glands that produce insulin wear out = diabetes!

Hi Witchy...

It's good that you're testing your glucose levels... but your morning
reading doesn't give you the whole picture.

Recent studies have indicated that the most important numbers are your
"after meal" numbers. They may be the most indicative of future
complications, especially heart problems.

You might want to try some experiments.

Test yourself at the following times:

Upon waking (fasting)
1 hour after each meal
2 hours after each meal
At bedtime

That means 8 x each day. What you will discover by this is how long
after a meal your highest reading comes... and how fast you return to
"normal".

The closer we get to non-diabetic numbers, the greater chance we have of
avoiding horrible complications. The key here is AIM... I know that
everyone is at a different point in their disease... and it is progressive.
But, if we aim for the best numbers and do our best, we give ourselves the
best shot at heath we've got.
That's all we can do.

Here's my opinion on what numbers to aim for, they are non-diabetic numbers.

FBG under 100
One hour after meals under 140
Two hours after meals under 120

or for those in the mmol parts of the world:

Fasting Under 6
One hour after meals Under 8
Two hours after meals Under 6.5

Your meter is your best weapon.

Best of luck!

Jennifer

do you think you could go back and read my original post?

oh...i did leave out that i took a 6 week belly dancing class, too.

i don't eat fast food. i dont like it. i dont do pies and cakes... only
occasionally ...got it. i like hard candy.

i'm on a low carb/low fat eating plan. fairly healthy means fruits and
vegetables means i watch what i eat. i have cut out the hard candy as of
3 weeks ago

i'm wondering why i am bothering to answer
you but i will continue.

i began atkins in 2003. had to stop because my cholesterol went way too
high. (you don't need to know. just higher than normal.) i went on south
beach & low fat combo...meaning a potato here & there. my numbers were
normal in 3 months.

i lost 13 lbs on atkins ...that's all, down to 163.
i have not gone above that since then

my current weight is 155. i am 5'8. i do not drink, smoke, or whatever
else you may consider an unhealthy "lifestyle"

i could stand to lose 15 pounds..

does that bring you up to speed?

i watched my sister go blind and go on dialysis.
she must have been a type1. but in the olden days ppl didnt run to the
doctor every 5 minutes...especially if they were poor. after she was
diagnosed at age 32 i watched her do everyhing thing right. it wasnt
enough. she died at 62

OK but it's not the end of the world. :-) Diet has a lot to do with where
you will go from here. My BIL controls his diabetes with diet alone.

Could it be purely genetic in your case? If it is then you can't blame diet
or obesity.

What I meant is if you are obese you had to be eating the wrong foods unless
it's hormonal, which you didn't mention.

At 5' 8" and a weight of 155 you certainly aren't obese.

You wouldn't have to top post and apologize for top posting if you just
clipped out the previous post. That would do it.....

IMO, you don't have to do this forever.

Basically, I do the 8X a day testing to figure out where I am,
especially when trying something new (change of diet, exercise
schedule, meds), etc. I also do it about every 3-6 months or so for a
week just to see how I am doing even if I haven't made any changes.

The idea is to know how things effect *you* - which is not the same as
how they effect other diabetics, necessarily. It's not to become a
slave to buying meter strips (which are darned expensive!)

IMO, a good start is to choose a baseline diet that you think you can
live with long term and go ahead and measure for a week and see where
you are.

Then try a change or two and see how that works, depending on what your
goals are vis-a-vis the baseline diet (maybe you want to try more
fruit, or aim for lower numbers, or try a new food).

IME, it takes a good week to really see how something works... and you
also need to not be sick when doing these experiments cause being sick
screws up your number massively.
