Default Beauty regimen question

Wendy wrote:

I am 40-ish and rarely wear makeup. But I've been realizing lately just
how many beauty regimens I've built up over the years. I'd like to cut
some if they're useless and I sometimes think I ought to wear
makeup and/or contacts. Do you do these things? Do you do more?

Let's see... I shampoo and condition in the shower, shave when I feel like
it, and go hairy when I don't. g Brush and floss. Comb my wet hair, then
leave it alone. I use Jergen's shave minimizing lotion on my legs, for both
dry skin and to make the hair finer, etc. It does work for me, btw. I have
pcos, which means I also have trouble with facial hair, and I recently
bought some Aveeno Positively Smooth facial lotion that works even better
than the Jergens for me. I plan to try it on my legs as well, see if it
does a better job than the Jergens in that area.

I use a pumice stone and then apply some lotion to my feet before putting on
socks. No pedicures or manicures, although I trim the nails when needed.

I wear sunscreen when I plan to go outside, but some days I spend inside the
house all day, so just use the Aveeno.

I usually don't wear makeup since I am mostly either just at home or at the
gym and grocery store, but when I do wear it, I wear eyeshadow, lipcolor,
and a dab of powder across my nose and forehead. That's it.

I have my hubby chop the ends off my hair when it is getting to be long
enough to look scraggly.

Oh, I wash my face with Cetaphil, very gentle cleanser. I use the Burt's
Bees citrus scrub once in a while. Usually no perfume, but I do use a
scented lotion on my shoulders and arms if I want a light scent -- I bought
an unscented lotion and added some carnation essential oil to make a
carnation perfumed lotion.

I guess that's it. I don't use the teeth whiteners, but I brush my teeth
with baking soda once or twice a week and that does seem to brighten them.
I drink a lot of coffee and tea, so this seems to help with the staining
you can get from that.

I tried getting the acrylic nails done in a French manicure one time, and
loved the look, but the nails drove me nuts. They felt like thick
suffocating plates over my natural nails, felt very awkward. I also
couldn't stop worrying that I might get some sort of nail fungus or
whatever. And I didn't like the weight of them, if that makes any sense.
So, my nails are just plain and unpolished now. I like the polished look,
but am not willing to spend the time to fiddle with maintenance, so instead
of having chipped polish all the time, I just have unpolished, short nails.
g

I sometimes envy the "finished" look some of my friends have, with the
tinted hair and the pretty nails. But when I honestly look at what I'm
willing to do for upkeep on a daily basis, I know I just don't want to
commit to that sort of look. This fits with my policy of never buying any
piece of clothing that will require ironing, no matter how much I love it.
I just won't be willing to mess with it. Tee shirts, sweatshirts, and
jeans for me. LOL

Fun to see what everyone else does -- this was a good idea for a thread.

Just a thought: Have you tried face lotion or moisturizer without
sunscreen? The easily irritated eyes sounds like what I used to get when
putting anything with sunscreen on my face. Since discontinuing use of
said products I haven't had it once. Besides, IMHO, if you don't spend
hours and hours outdoors you won't benefit from the added sunscreen anyways.

That's a good idea. No, I haven't tried face cream without sunscreen that
I recall - it just seemed like such a sensible idea that I've always
bought the mutlipurpose kind. And it DOES sting my eyes like crazy if I
get sweaty. In fact, I often avoid putting lotion near my eyes or on
my forehead if I think I might sweat.

Exactly my experience as well.

Sounds crazy but are you sure it's the lotion and not your shampoo? I read
in Runner's World that you should try to use a gentle shampoo, preferably
unscented, because residues end up in your eyes when you sweat. Anyway I
prefer to add my sunscreen separately from my lotion.

In my case, I'm sure about it. Since discontinuing the sunscreen stuff I
didn't get the irritated eyes once and I'm still using the same shampoo.
Besides, what the sunscreen does to my eyes is worse than anything I ever
had from getting shampoo or soap into my eyes.
