Default Weight loss and skin

Hi,

My wife is looking into losing 60 pounds and we are starting the South
Beach Diet officially today. I'm doing it with her, since I am the cook in
the family and need to understand how things work.

Anyway, my wife is very concerned with how she looks (thus the change in
our diet and exercize) and I am wondering what to expect to happen when
she loses that much weight? Not to seem insensitive or gross, will she
have a lot of saging skin and such? Or, will the skin shrink, at least a
little. She is exercizing and will continue to maintain that program.

I'm interested in knowing so I can discuss it with her and talk about
options to deal with her body image issues when that comes around.I want
to do what I can to help her feel good physically and emotionally.

Thanks for your comments.

Kurt,

Don't be taken in by the hype. A 60 lb weight loss even with a low carb diet
will take most people a couple years, so if your wife is young the skin will
have plenty of time to adjust just like it does after a pregnancy.

Also, it's good to be aware thta the weight loss you experience in the first
couple weeks of a low carb diet is a one time thing. After a few weeks it
will slow down and continue steadily or not so steadily at a pace most
bodies can adjust to well. I have a page that discusses the reasons for this
at http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/glycogen.htm.

I'm middle aged and have lost more than 30 lbs over the past 11 months.
There's no saggy skin anywhere and my Sweetie is a very happy man. So save
your worries for more relevant issues, like how do you stay on the diet when
it's no longer new and exciting and weight loss is only a pound every month
or so!

I think this is a YMMV because I have lost 70 lbs in 8.5 months I am 37 and
I have loose skin on my upper stomach and inner thighs and I need a breast
lift cause they are smaller and much lower than they used to be. : (

I think it will vary from person to person just like some folks get stretch
marks and others do not.

It's nice of you to be concerned with your wife's future wellbeing as
far as body image goes. Unfortunately there's no way to predict whether
she'll experience sagging skin or not until she loses the weight. I
lost 100 in just over 19 months, been maintaining for the past 3 years
and ended up with lots of extra skin (I exercise regularly and I'm a 36
year old female). Another woman in here lost more than I did, faster,
(she's about the same age as I am) and ended up being able to wear
revealing swimsuits to the beach. It's a crapshoot. My advice would be
"plan for the worst and hope for the best".

Take care,
Carmen
