Hard to find ingredients
I was on Atkins four years ago and did really well (until I discovered
Starch Blockers which blocked them into my body). I am now returning to a low-carb lifestyle. But in resurrecting some of my old recipes I find that it is no longer easy to get some of the ingredients I used to use. For instance, Atkins no longer has their Bake Mix. Is there a substitute available for it? As others come to mind I will add to my "where are they now" list. Thanks Jim |

"Old Guy" I was on Atkins four years ago and did really well (until I discovered Starch Blockers which blocked them into my body). I know that is what Starch Blockers claim, but why do you think it did/did not work? I am skeptical of those claims. If it were that easy (just take a few Starch Blockers and stay slim) then the entire world would do it, right? Pat in TX |

CarbQuik, http://www.netrition.com/tova_carbquik_page.html I'll second the recommendation for CarbQuik. I've only made the biscuits so far, but they're quite good, and I'm looking forward to using it for other things. The pizza recipe on the box looks great. -- Aaron -- 285/254/200 -- aaron.baugher.biz |

I also love CarbQuik for many things - it makes a great coating for chicken, mixed with parmesan and spices - but not too crazy about the crust recipe. It makes it taste like pizza on a biscuit . However, I've managed to make a decent crust using equal parts CarbQuik, VWG, and parmesan cheese, with just water and oil. But CarbQuik is, overall, one of the best low carb offerings out there, even if I do only use it once a month or so. -- Sherry lowcarb.owly.net |

That one word "into" makes all the difference. Welcome back, Old Guy. Lesson learned? With low carb what I've seen is getting on is hard, staying on is easy, falling off is easy, getting back on is hard. I know that is what Starch Blockers claim, but why do you think it did/did not work? I am skeptical of those claims. If I read the wording right, they caused a transition out of low carb. That means they didn't work. If it were that easy (just take a few Starch Blockers and stay slim) then the entire world would do it, right? Exactly. No magic bullet. I've corresponded with folks who said they used starch blockers as a partial antidote to a cheat. Reduce the carb hangover effect at least some. I worry about that turning into a vicious cycle of negative feedback bouncing between strict and cheat until falling off plan. BTDTgtTS. |

If I thought starch blockers actually worked, I'd think using them say once a month or so would be OK. As it is, I use larger doses of insulin to cover the occassional cheat. I agree that not cheating is better, just I don't find it realistic for the long run. YMMV. -- http://www.ornery-geeks.org/consulting/ |

I'm probably going to buy a 5 lb supply of CarbQuick --- only about $4.50 shipping for 5 lbs at something like $11 or so. What is VWG ?? Vital Wheat Germ ?? Virtual Wheat Goodness ?? But CarbQuik is, overall, one of the best low carb offerings out there, even if I do only use it once a month or so. |

Has anyone tried FiberFit from Netrition.com? It's a fiber supplement
sweetened with sucralose. I'm not that concerned about the fiber, but apparently people are using it as a way to get Splenda without the sugar fillers that you get in the packets. The reviews are all very positive, but it sure is expensive. -- Aaron -- 285/254/200 -- aaron.baugher.biz |
