Howdy;

At $19.96 per half gallon I though I would get some impressions before I
buy.

Regards and THANKS

It is hard to say whether you will like it or not--seems to be
very much a YMMV-type thing. I was disappointed in the chocolate
flavor (I like very intense chocolate) and thought the texture was
a bit hard, but if you are desperate for some ice cream and don't
want to make it yourself, it can be a good thing. It is also nice
that it comes in those little cups, so it is easy to stop at that
amount.

Personally, I think it's finally time for me to either actually
use the ice cream maker that I have had for about two decades or
to get a new one. Guess I should start with what I have. Maybe I
will spend the afternoon looking for some nice LC ice cream
recipes. I have seen some in the short time I have been here, so
I know there must be a lot more out there!

It's good, but it's nowhere near THAT good.

We have a regional brand on the west coast called Dreyers that makes a
decent No Sugar Added (NSA) ice cream. It's not free of carbs, but
the carb count is low enough (after subtracting fiber and sugar
alcohols) that many people can fit it in. It is also a reduced fat
product, but there is enough fat left in that it isn't bad.

Be careful, though. They also make a line that is both No Sugar Added
=AND= completely Fat Free. That stuff is pretty poor, and stores tend
to mingle the two products. Read the labels!

You could also check the Blue Bunny website to see if anyone near you
carries their lowcarb ice cream.

Can't tell where you are, but look for the "Blue Bunny" brand at Wal-Mart.
They taste awesome and most fall in at 16 to 20 carbs per serving. My wife
picked up some butter pecan and rocky road the other night and they were
actually better than our old sugared ice-cream. Price $3.25 per half
gallon, comes in bars also.

Here's my ice cream substitute:

1/4 cup of frozen wild blueberries
1/4 cup plain full-fat yogurt.

mix together, and the frozen blueberries semi-freeze up the
yogurt, making pure, real-food "frozen yogurt" that is creamy
and smooth to the tongue, very orgasmic.... 1/4 cup of the
blueberries has something like 5g carb, plain yogurt is
less than that. So for about a 7 or so gram treat, that is IT
and it saves $$$ too. (Not to mention the lack of empty
calories)

I've tried the vanilla and it was pretty good however I have a recipe for my
little ice cream maker that tastes very similar. Just tried the chocolate
today and it tastes more like frozen chocolate Cool Whip, not bad but not
great. I paid $4.25 at The Good Earth (health food store) and probably won't
buy it again. When I make ice cream I put my home made ice cream in small
cups and freeze them, very economical and good but I had to try the Atkins
stuff. Frankly I haven't been that impressed with any of the products that
I've tried, very pricey and not that tasty.

Yes, it is expensive :P But I look at it like buying an ice cream cone at
Baskin-Robbins, it's about convenience. People pay $2 for an ice cream
cone and don't complain.

I think that the vanilla is good. The chocolate is okay. Of course,
neither one is anything like Haagen-Daazs!

The most interesting thing to me is how different each person's tastebuds
are. There are things that people rave about on here that I have tried
and think taste revolting and I'm sure the reverse is true. You will just
have to try it and decide for yourself. I'm guessing that you are already
prejudiced based on your cost assesment I think that the good thing on
this NG is that if most EVERYONE on this group says something is
disgusting, you can probably skip trying it.
