What can I drink in Britain

if you have actually taken all the advice the above people have made and are serious... i stick to diet coke, diet (slimline) bitter lemon or tonic water. http://citizenship.coca-cola.co.uk/a...?brand=smixers you might get the odd diet tango, but usually these are your lot. I went to Tesco today to check out Diet Coke, and it seems fine. There didn't seem a world of difference between it and Sugar-free Coke, at a glance anyway. So I went to the pub and had one and it's way more sensible a buy than OJ because you get way more (lasts longer, especially if you don't like it) and it's sans carbs. Thus armed, how long now till I shrink down to a mere 22 stone, one wonders? Thanks group! They don't have expensive water like Perrier or Evian (naive spelled backwards) in Britian? You can buy one of those. I don't think they have them in pubs, more restaurants. I'm in the pub later, I'll have a looksee and report back. Alternately, don't pubs in Britian have food that costs money? Crisps, peanuts etc. Not exactly low-carb. I'll have the steak and veggies special, and since I'm emptying my wallet on the food a glass of water please. Jeez, you go in the wrong pubs. Most places don't do anything like that now, not out here (Hampton Court, Surrey area). In town they might all be trying to go gastrofoodie, but not out here, there isn't the trade. I don't get the virtuous part of why you listed coffee, tea and alcohol together in the same list. But that does eliminate that carb-free beer stuff they've been making for centuries. Whiskey. Sigh. wrote: So, not sinful, per se, but IIRC, in my version of DANDR, Dr. A doesn't have a fond place in his heart for caffeine. From DANDR (2002 edition, 10th printing, paperback), Chapter 11 (And Away You Go: The Induction Phase), page 127: ***** Beverages: Clear Broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label) club soda cream (heavy or light): limit to 2-3 tablespoons/day; note carbohydrate content decaffeinated coffee or tea* --- italics* Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages... ***** That's the chapter and verse. I don't have a more recent copy or a less recent one, but I think that's the last version of DANDR while Dr. A was alive (Atkins for Life was maybe while he was alive, I don't recall/care). On the flip side, the Eadeses note (page 104, Protein Power, copy 1996, edition 1999, trade paper) "You may drink your coffee, tea or diet cola caffeinated or decaf. Most people don't have any trouble with caffeine use. But a few people will be sensitive enough to insulin output that the caffeine in beverages will keep their insulin levels somewhat elevated..." They go on to suggest that if you are doing everything else right and it's not working, cut the caff. Since OP is drinking OJ, it's a bit of a stretcher to say he's doing everything right, it must be the caff. Small point form the OP here; I'm not drinking caff, which is how this arose. But, personally, I think it's admirable. Not drinking caffeine? I stopped it the same way I do most htings, cut out that first thing cuppa, then have none before 12, then before three, then before five, and work up to none at all. I gave up cigarettes that way too, back in the day. I'm working on giving up using hip expressions in my posts too.... I have had to cut it back pretty sharply, but that's cause I take a stimulant for something else and they suggest that caff + pill = wall bouncing/heart issues. In their subsequent book, PP LifePlan, the Eades give you options, but if you go "purist" (very hard core raw foods, organic, unprocessed ruling out cheese, which is foot hating madness in my book) you gotta cut the caff beverages. If you are a Dilettante or a Hedonist (I'm in there somewhere), you can have the caff. Any rate, OP should opt for diet cokes and the like, or mineral/fizzy water with lemon twist and the like there. Or get LC pub food and drink the H2O. He's gotten this advice, but if he wants to kick Alcohol (food hating madness, the vino is good good good for you) and caff, rock on to him. I haven't had a drink since end March three years ago. Yay me, eh? Used to be a bottle of vodka a day man, got that way when I went hyperthyroid. Enough was enough in the end. I miss drinking but I keep myself busy other ways now. I also kicked caff beverages for like 9 months once, and I still puzzle over why I switched back. Just when you think it's safe to go back in the kitchen....:-( BB -- http://www.kruse.co.uk/good-google-listing.htm http://www.kruse.co.uk/content-management-systems.htm http://www.kruse.co.uk/free-seo-advice.htm |

wrote: Big Bill writes: I read it about five years ago, is that enough, do you think? Does anyone know of an online list of lo-cal drinks I could peruse at all? I'm not sure there's such a list, because it's too simple to bother writing down. Drinks with sugar (including fruit juice): bad. Drinks without sweetener: okay. Low- or no-carb alcohol, or drinks with artificial sweetener: maybe okay, use at your own risk. So unsweetened tea and coffee are fine; your choice on the caffeine. Tisanes (tea made from herbs, flowers, whatever else is growing nearby) should be fine too, unsweetened. Milk is pretty carby, so some people mix water into heavy cream to get a similar consistency with far fewer carbs. Fruit juices are out, as well as anything that's been sweetened with sugar: Kool-aid, eggnog, etc. Vegetable juice like V8 might be okay; check the labels like any food. There's a thought, thanks. That might be handy to have in the fridge instead of juice for a morning slurp. Hard alcohols are zero carb, so drink them straight; just remember that while you're burning the alcohol you aren't burning fat. Yup, I know, it gets burned first. As for all the diet stuff, some people have trouble with it, and some don't. If you don't already have an addiction to it, there's no point in starting one. Addiction to diet stuff? The places I've been to are someone's idea of what a pub across the pond might be. And places I've seen on TV. Some here always have a menu, others go through phases. Though in terms of our conversation I ask which of the two of us is the one going to the wrong pub, the one with low carb steak on the menu or the one with some carby stuff on the menu ... ;^) I don't get the virtuous part of why you listed coffee, tea and alcohol together in the same list. But that does eliminate that carb-free beer stuff they've been making for centuries. Whiskey. Sigh. Whiskey...:-( These days I punt on worrying about carbs in my alcoholic drinks. I might average one per week and they tend towards beers and ales. Today was a bottle of Chimay red Trappist ale and it was my first alcohol in a couple of weeks. But I did gaze at a bottle of Bas Argmanac for several seconds while heading to the specialist ale section of the store so maybe next year it will be time for some distilled stuff. Wanna bet Big Bill and I agree and disagree on types of whisky? Agree - Liking the local stuff. Disagree - American rye vs one of those European barley whiskeys ... Barley that could have been made into perfectly good ale ... |
