A small snack an hour before would be my recommendation. Ah, but there's the rub. If I get on the bike at 5:20 in the morning that would mean getting up at close to 4 am to have my snack. ;-) -- jmk in NC- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I run at 5:30 am. The only time I need to eat is when I run more than 5 miles. Anything less than that isn't necessary. |

Hi, Is it best to eat before or after a trip to the gym? If you're not sure, do both. That way you cover all the bases. I generally go from 8pm-9pm and typically I eat around 7pm. With weight loss being the goal here is this the best choice? For weight loss, the best choice is to consume fewer calories than you burn. Most people don't spend enough calories in exercise for it to make a difference how they time their eating. As a rule, serious athletes emphasize refueling rather than prefueling. Also, it's more comfortable to exercise on an empty stomach. |

I work out and have breakfast while doing morning e-mail at work. On the weekend, I eat breakfast before my long rides (and snack along the way if needed). -- jmk in NC |

Yeah, well, I more or less subscribed to b) for most of my life, with starving, purging and pills. I'm opting for a) now, but old compulsions are The Big Bad and tough to stake. Assuming you are following a regular diet even if calorie restricted you are going to have up to 90 mins of glycogen to keep you going. I do eat before a run but I don't have to suffer the early mornings! If I've eaten I don't now carry water or nutrition for any less than a half marathon (although have money for emergency water if necessary!). Of course that's different for Americans because the weather come the spring/summer is sooooo much hotter so more water needed. -- Rachael 176/116/119 www.justgiving.com/rachaelslondonmarathon |

Trying to push the body without fuel kept me at a strength plateau and never really offered gains. Pre-lunch workouts have been much more rewarding. -- Cheese http://cheesensweets.com/contacts/cheese.php |

Thanks Mike Ultimately while many hold religious opionons on how soon to eat before a workout or after a workout, what I've found is this: 1. It's important to work out hard 2. If you do eat before a workout, eat about 30-45 minutes something light like a small serving of yogurt. 3. When you have your post-meal workout, make sure it has good amount of protein and moderate portions. Avoid late night snacking on junk food. A planned snack of veggies and/or nuts is fine. |
