Default lipid blood test after 5 weeks - what to expect?

Hi,

I was *enjoying* low-carb WOE for about one month (as my start was very
chaotic, I unfortunately do not know exactly).

I have lost 6kg (13lb, starting at 224lb) so far, so I am generally very
happy with this new life style. I never realized all these veggies are
so tasty once you drop sugar, potatoes and flour from your diet and stop
caring about fat/cholesterol content.

Anyway, today I have visited my physician (for completely unrelated
reason) and he ordered me to do cholesterol tests. I know that one year
ago, my levels were raised. He does not know that I am low-carbing -
physicians in my country are almost unaware of low-carb / atkins and
when it is ever mentioned anywhere, it is regarded as "a way to commit
the suicide". So, according to her, I should have followed low-fat
diet... No way I could get his support

Now I am little bit worried what will happen and how will this end. From
what I have read, my lipid profiles should generally improve in the long
term (I considered testing tham on March), but what should I expect
after one month?

Mirek

P.S.: Sorry for my English

I would not expect improvement after one month....in fact, it may go up.
This could cause concern with your doctor if you were already high.
However, over the long term (6 months and out) you should see HDL go up,
trigs drop significantly, and LDL stay about the same or may be drop a bit.
So your total after 6 month may increase slightly, but your ratios will be
much better. The total on cholesterol is not the main factor, if you
believe that it even is important. The fact is, your body makes it own
cholesterol, and if you eat more it simply makes less, and if you eat less
cholesterol, your body makes more. So dietary cholesterol has little to do
with serum cholesterol. There are various studies on this that you can
print out and take to your doctor.

others have reported similar.

Depending on where you were when you started, most likely your LDL (bad
cholesterol) will be somewhat lower, your HDL (good cholesterol) will be
appreciably higher, and your triglycerides will have plummeted. However (and
this is the problem) your total cholesterol may still be high and
unfortunately it's this figure that (mostly clueless) doctors attach the
most importance to.

Mirek:

I can only speak from personal information. I had very high cholesterol and
have been fighting it for over five years. Only medication had any effect
on the numbers. Then I started Atkins to bring down my weight. After 6
months on the program, my "bad" cholesterol went down 5 points, my good
cholesterol went up 10 points and the overall cholesterol (combined) was
down approximately 12 points. My triglycerides dropped over 425 points.

I too have to lie to my doctor about being on Atkins as he considers it to
be a "fad diet" and unhealthy. But it worked for me in a number of ways,
including a 37 pound weight loss. Can't say it will be the same for you but
long term appears to show good results. Short term is probably not as good
and may show an increase.

Why do you "have to" lie to your doctor? Your doctor is your employee, not
your father, not the law, you don't have to follow his advice. Tell him
what is working for you, maybe he will get educated.
