SWEN virus/worm now posing as bounced email
Okay, so let me make sure I understand- the six or seven emails in my inbox
titled Postmaster are likely the result of a worm, as are the emails from MS Corporation Tech. Assistance that claim to have a security patch? I haven't opened any of them, because I was suspicious. I only use that address for USENET, and I have no one in my address book. Also, the address is very new, and I was wondering how on earth Microsoft got a hold of it so fast. Jake. "jamie" wrote in message ... Would everyone who uses Outlook please patch up their systems, and every Windows user who is not *absolutely* sure that their antivirus is up to date, please get an update and scan your machine. I received more than 200 copies of SWEN worm/virus emails in the last 24 hours, coming from about twenty infected PCs, all coming to the email address I use only for newsgroups. Fortunately, I don't use Windows, so I don't have to worry about infection, but as almost all the posting I do is to ASD or ASDLC, I expect most of the infected users picked up my address in their addressbook by responding to me in these two groups. This is a variant of one of the viruses whose email posed as a Microsoft patch. Now it's posing as faux bounced (returned) email messages. (I might add it does a very poor job of looking anything like actual bounced mail, except for the subject line.) -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

They assume you'll have the update thingy turned on and find out about new patches that way. If you get such an email, assume it's a virus. I haven't had any dodgy emails but that's probably something to do with having a munged email addy so I'm not in anyone's address books. I use Mailwasher which checks my mail accounts on the pop3 server and I can choose who are friends and who should be blacklisted, and the blacklisted ones get bounced. If I think I have a potentially harmful email from someone who appears to be a friend, I can check the message text and delete it if necessary. Saves me downloading all that crap. I got totally bombarded at work over the last month or so with the damn sobig and blaster stuff. Between the virus emails and the bounces from all and sundry, I was probably averaging about 50 per day. That's in addition to all the spam. blah A good antivirus programme goes a long way ) Rachel (New Zealand) |
