Default Atkins and Blood Pressure

I did google this subject, but didn't quite see the below situation.

A co-worker of mine had trouble with her blood pressure while she was
pregnant and really bad when it came time for delivery. After she had
the baby, her blood pressure went back to normal after awhile. That
was a year ago. She is not on BP meds that I know of.

At the end of last week she started doing Atkins. After cutting carbs
for a couple of days, her blood pressure shot up "because of all the
protein she was eating". Then when she ate "normal", her BP came down.

I don't understand this. Do you think that it was a temporary thing
and would have subsided after awhile? Her BP was so high it was giving
her a headache.

Can anyone relate or give some insight?

Peggy

My blood pressure has decreased, although I've also lost about 60 pounds.
I guess her blood pressure could shoot up due to water loss, but that
effect is very temporary.

Who says it had anything to do with all the protein she was eating? Unless
she is eating lean cuts of meat, it is likely she is eating a lot more fat
than protein. Also, what else was she eating? It is difficult for one to
say why her BP shot up and speculation is not at all helpful.

It is normal for people, when they start doing Atkins, to have the side of
effect a headache, as well as other things. Those are part of the adaptation
phase to LCing. My guess is her BP being high was due to her not feeling
well due to the withdrawal from carbs.

You know, she can skip induction and just start at 30 tp 40 g of carbs per
day. It is very possible to lose weight with that approach, though it is
not really part of Atkins.

Did she actually measure her blood pressure or did she translate her
headache into high blood pressure?

I would be concerned about the symptomatic elevations in BP. Her doctor(s)
should be informed.
