Running 9.5 minute miles for a fit woman is not remarkable in any sense. You're just bizarre. Chris, I think your idea of setting the pace and taking brief walking breaks is a great training method! Dally I agree. A 30 minute 5K is quite slow for most women runners but a great goal for someone who isn't an experienced runner. Using a run/walk method has been quite successful for most beginners and Chris isn't a beginner when it comes to fitness or exercise. Only she knows what she is capable of doing. Chris, best of luck with your goal. You know we're all rooting for you. Jenn |

Dally Are you saying that running 17% faster than she does now, is going to be easy? Easy in the sense that it's quite achievable if she attempts it. Not easy in that it'll be some work. What you're not getting is that she already runs that distance without training for running. If she spends any time at all on this goal she will achieve it. Her point isn't that she wants to grow wings on her feet, her point is that she wants to start training for this sport. You're creeping me out again. Don't you realize that MOST 5K runners beat 30 minutes? You're some combination of ignorant and insulting and judgemental that isn't working for me. Dally |

You want to run a marathon on a low carb diet and very little training, which is sheer madness. Martha |

Here is a man who, is rec.running, told everyone that he was attempting a marathon on that weird-ass caveman diet he's on. Everyone and I mean everyone, told him it was the wrong thing to do, that he probably could do it, but gave him much better suggestions on how to do it better. He did not listen to any of them and continued on his little bizarre junk science. He's not into listening, he's into telling and not even following his own advice, or anyone else's for that matter. "Chris Braun" wrote in message ... Rather than adding to the ongoing thread, I've picked a title that I should be able to find more easily 12 months from now with a google search :-). Anyway, here are my resolutions/goals -- fitness related and otherwise. The resolutions are things over which I have pretty full control; the goals are things I hope to attain. I've got rather a lot of them :-). Resolutions: 1. Improve my French speaking/comprehension skills. (the inlaws are French Canadian.) If anyone knows of a good source for learning French Canadian (as apposed to Parisian French) I would greatly appreciate it. 2. Recreate my workout routine. Exercise at least 3 times a week. Utilize my gym membership. 3. Lose weight. :-) Get back to below 130 for maintenance. 4. Spend 1 weekend per month repainting the trim around the house. (baseboards, trim, doors, etc. time for 8yrs old maintenance on the house). 5. Keep my room clean and not leave my clothes on the chair. (already broken. |

Phil M. wrote: Leafing through alt.support.diet, I read a message from of 01 Jan 2005: 4. Be able to run 5K in 30 minutes on the treadmill. (Currently this would probably take me about 36 minutes. I'm not a very fast runner.) (I'm using the treadmill rather than an outdoor race here since it's what I do, and I don't have any idea what I could do in a real race.) You will be amazed at how much faster you can go in a real race. The excitement of the day will probably allow you to do a 30:00 5K with not much more training than you already do. Just as a test of your fitness you could do a mile time trial. In order to be fit enough to run a 30 minute 5K you should be able to run 1 mile in 8:40 or less. Phil M. Plus, treadmill running is a lot slower than road running for me anyway. I get incredibly bored on the treadmill, I don't know how anyone can stand it. Running on the road with other around you will make you go a lot faster. Martha |

Running on the road with other around you will make you go a lot faster. I've shaved a whole minute off my time both times I ran road races. When I thought I was doing 13 minute miles I ran the four mile in 48 minutes. When I thought I was doing 11 minute miles I ran a 5K race in 31 minutes. FWIW. Dally |
