2 pounds in 24 days
Jke wrote: I am a little confused. If your BMR is 1321 kcal/day, that is before any type of moving/exercise at all. So, assuming you do not lie in bed all day, you probably burn several hundreds of kcal/ day MORE than 1321. You're right. I know for sure I eat more than 1300 kcal/day to maintain my weight of about 117 lbs. I probably eat around 1700 kcal/day on average. I want to lose weight more quickly though, that's why I'm going by my BMR. Ideally I want to underestimate the weight loss I will have so I will be encourged by the results. |

Chris Braun wrote: Exercise makes weight loss a whole lot easier for most people -- and as you note, lets you lose faster without starving yourself. But 2 km walk (only a little over a mile) isn't very much exercise for a young woman like yourself. Why so little? (I am 58 years old, and I run 4-10 km 3 mornings a week -- and spend an hour or two at the gym on the other days. When I was working, I also went on lunchtime walks with a friend most days, and we'd walk around 5-6 km each day. And he's 56.) Can't you walk more than that, or start running or biking or something? And how about some resistance training? For someone like yourself who's already fairly light but would like a better appearance, resistance training can really help achieve your goal. You're right, I should walk more than 2 km a day. I'm just setting the bar low so I'm more likely to succeed. Once I make walking 2 km a habit, I will increase it. |

Harris Benedict Formula To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follows: She stated her BMR is 1321 calories/day so with no exercise her calorie needs are 1585.2 (unless I've really stuffed up the caculator) With light exercise is becomes 1816.375 and so a calorie intake of 1000 is way too low. You are simply regurgitating some information that you've read on the internet or from some other source. Just because it's in print, doesn't mean it's accurate. I am 5'3" and can easily maintain my weight with 1500 calories per day. But I'd never be able to lose on 1500 unless I exercised quite a bit. In order to lose weight, I need to take it down to around 1200 per day, and still exercise about an hour every day. There is no "one size fits all" rule about what will work for each individual. How tall is she? http://www.dieting-review.com/BMI.jpg If she's over 5'7 she's underweight and if she isn't then she's the right weight and any issues she has may with weight may be about distribution of that weight rather than the total. That can't be solved by radical dieting of 1000 calories a day. That spreadsheet shows that a "healthy range" could be as wide as 30lbs. YOu can't make a blanket stmt that she's "the right weight" without knowing or seeing her. If you get to a point in a diet where you're within your BMI and you can't shed any more weight then you need to look outside the whole issues of diet and look at body acceptance and tone up if you are unhappy with your shape. I agree with you there. There is such a thing as a skinny fat person. |

Yeah, I really should up my exercise. I can't run though. I can only run for about 30 secs. I walk to exercise. Well, you might as well give up then. There certainly aren't any other forms of exercise you could do. |

I don't get what's going on here. Jenny weighs 119 and wants to lose how much? Is she 3 feet tall? Doesn't anyone worry about her low weight goals? I don't think anything she does (or says she does) is very sensible, but I also don't think she really cares about what's really going on with her body. And that's not anything that anyone here can help her with. People have tried talking sense into her several times, but every time she comes back she's in the exact same place she was when she left. |

pug wrote: BTW, how tall are you? My goal weight currently is 112 pounds and I am 5' 2" tall. Three weeks ago I cut back my calories from 1200-1300 a day to 1120 a day. I now weigh 115.5 pounds, down from 117.5 pounds. I have been at 115.5 pounds for one week. I am guessing if I continue to eat 1120 calories a day I might reach my goal weight by December or January. I'm only 4'11" What is your goal weight? 112 pounds as I mentioned above. Here is my rule for determining one's ideal weight (women only). If you are 5' tall your ideal weight is 100 pounds. Add 5 pounds for every inch you are above 5' and that is your ideal weight. In my example, as I am 5' 2" tall, my ideal weight is 110 pounds. I am currently 115 pounds, which means I am 5 pounds over my ideal weight. If I were to weigh 110 pounds I would then be a little below the middle of the BMI "normal weight" range on the BMI scale for my height: 5' 2" BMI Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 110 pounds = 20.1 Currently I am 115 pounds and at 21.0 on the BMI scale. When I say ideal weight, I am saying the weight one would love to be at for optimum "feel good" and health reasons. In your example, being you are only 4' 11' tall, I believe a goal of an ideal weight of 95-100 pounds is not unreasonable. Even at 95 pounds you would be at the low end of the BMI normal range scale, but you would not be underweight, in my opinion. (start the flames a throwin') I am not saying exercise isn't good, I am just advising that since you are at such a low bodyweight now, don't use the averages that most people use for calories expended used when exercising. Be realistic. Yeah I know. Sucks eh? Unfortunately, if you are a short person such as you and I, you cannot eat as much as people who are in the normal height range. It is a fact of life. Also, you do not burn as many calories in exercise as people who are taller and heavier. My exercise consists of walking, biking, skiing and weight training. I am guessing you are going to need some form of exercise to lose and maintain the weight loss. I don't know how old you are, but the older you get the slower one's metabolism seems to become (that has been my experience), having a regular exercise program could mean that you will be able to eat more calories per day and still lose weight. As to rewarding yourself with food. As I stated in my previous reply, I have one day a week where I eat whatever I want (no counting calories). I do not have a problem with a food reward, as I understand that it is only one day, and the next day I will be back on my low calorie WOE. Also, as I stated before, I usually don't eat a whole lot on my food reward day, as my stomach can't take a lot of food, as I am in the habit of eating small amounts of food anyway from the previous six days of the week. The reason I want a reward day with food, is because there are some days I will want to go to a restaurant (too hard to count calories in restaurants in my opinion), there are some days I will want to eat that dessert, so I save those cravings for my reward day. If I were to deny my food cravings and never have a food reward day, I guarantee you I would never stick with my low calorie WOE. I would become miserable and depressed and go back to eating my "reward" foods seven days a week, instead of one day per week. I understand many people cannot reward themselves with food, but I have found that it works for me, so perhaps it will work for you. Oh well, just my two cents worth. It has taken me years to come to the realization that if one wants to stay thin, you really can't eat much as the modern lifestyle does not promote daily physical activity. You can't be a slug and eat what you want and expect to be thin. Not going to happen, as proof by the large percentage of overweight and obese people in many western societies (yeah America, I am fingering you). pug 5' 2" - 117.5/115/112 started new WOE 8/23/06 (age - 40 years old) |

I'll suggest the same thing I suggested to you several months ago when you were here saying the exact same thing. Jog for 30 seconds then walk for a couple minutes, repeat. Each week try to increase the jog time a little. |
