Default The hardest time of year...

It's not just because of all of the holidays and parties that are coming
hard upon us--I am used to dealing with them, and manage pretty well.
It's the weather!! I don't ever remember being so cold all of the time.

My hands and feet are like ice, I have space heater going full bore
under my desk, I'm drinking tons of hot green tea and one mug of SF hot
cocoa a day, and want to eat, eat, eat to fuel my furnace. I'll use any
excuse to fire up the oven--tuna noodle and brownies, anyone?
And to top it off it's dark most of the day--I can't seem to get in gear
without early mornin' sunshine.

How do you cope with the loss of insulating fat and cold weather? How do
you keep yourself motivated to workout when, baby, it's freezing out
there? And does light therapy or tanning really help with those winter
blues?

Okay--time to change into my gym duds and head out--I think I'll take
the heater with me...

I live in the pacific nw, and when November gets here, I'm going to work in
the dark, coming home in the dark. We don't get alot of sunny days from
Nov-Feb, and I don't like it! Winter is when I used to put on weight, but
since I took up skiing last winter, that gives me something to do that burns
lots of calories - and gets my butt out the house! I do alot of cooking
during fall/winter too. I don't do the tanning thing because I have fair
skin, but have noticed that if I at least get outside and get some natural
light, I feel better. I like to hike and may even try mountain biking this
winter... Working up a sweat always makes me feel better.

i try to make sure that i am FUELING MY FURNACE properly, and that would
include lots of protien and the right kind of fats!




How do
you keep yourself motivated to workout when, baby, it's freezing out
there?



i make committments to my walking team, then "i suit up and show up"!



And does light therapy or tanning really help with those winter
blues?



i do not have time to be sitting in front of a light box, but do have a
couple clients who do, with great success.
i use a tanning booth, 20 minutes a week, and that seems to do the
trick!

one more thing..................since switching to a LOW CARB WOE, i
have far less problems with seasonal effective disorder.

I know a lot of people who are doing well with light therapy, and one friend
who used to do tanning to get some sun/light in the winter. I know I feel a
lot better if I eat my lunches outside to get some sun. I'm lucky enough to
live in southern California where it is sunny most of the time, but if I don't
try, I end up coming to work when it's pretty much dark, and leaving work when
it's dark too.

Medication also works well for SAD, if your winter blues are bad enough.

Why do you think that is? I have started taking Vit D supplements since I
read that that can help reduce the symptoms. My kids know that every year
after daylight savings switches I go on one of my "I hate dusk" rants. I
can't handle the early setting of the sun and I get really irritable until,
I guess, in my mind, it really should be dark. Elise.

Just bought 7 pairs of long underwear at Wal Mart, plus one really high
quality pair for skiing. I am always so cold nowadays. My physician just
had me get a thyroid test today to make sure it wasn't the thyroid because I
have to wear gloves inside at times.

The darkness gets to me so I make it a point to get outside at least once a
day. I work in a room with no windows. Since I also pledged to leave work
promptly each day (no more OT), that should get me outside in the afternoons
to snowshoe (if we get snow) or at least take a walk or a run. The running
is tough for me when it's cold because regardless of how many layers I put
on, my hands get so cold they hurt.

As far as workouts go, I stopped and got the info for one of the resorts in
town with a pool, sauna, whirlpool and a fitness room with treadmills,
steppers, bikes, and ellipticals. I'm going back tomorrow to pay for my 90
day membership. I'll be going there after work, even if it's for a 20
minute workout. I also happen to enjoy exercise videos. I've been on a Tae
Bo kick lately (no pun intended) but found out that it's not a good thing to
do daily as I am sore between my butt and my knees, but my thighs are
getting rather solid Just got a few DVD's with some killer advanced
interval and cardio training to keep me warm and chase away those winter
blues!

This is not easy for me either with the cold and all. I'm thankful that
I'mworking after 9years at home! But I know that I'm not doing as well
in the colder weather and I need to get out the treadmill. We keep it
folded during the warmer weather.
I turn up the music and dance too. Anything to help me to 'FEEL THIN' is
a lot of my help.

I don't seem to be bothered by the cold weather but the lack of sunny days
has always been a problem for me. My favorite form of exercise is riding
bikes and it's hard to do that after dark or when the trails are covered
with snow and ice. I'm hoping my joining Curves will help to keep the
exercise going during the winter months.

I find myself turning more lights on in the house during winter than
summer months. I think it helps and the electric company loves me. I'm
dreading the switch from DST this weekend

Thanks, Jenn!

I braved the cold (and it's not even THAT cold, yet) and had a two hour
workout at the gym yesterday afternoon--lifted (chest day), elliptical
for 20 minutes, then a one hour pilates class. It was nice an toasty in
the gym and the classroom, so I was glad I went.

It's still dark this morning and it's almost 9 a.m.--that's what really
gets to me. I'll have to find a way to combat the lethargy caused by
lack of light--when DSL kicks in, I want to conk out at six...
