Default Tired of being tired...

I go through these spells of being dead tired for a day or so then back to
feeling "normal." Maybe I'm just running out of energy (carbs) and sort of
running on auxiliary. Or maybe I'm missing some suppliants. I take a good
multi-vitamin and try to balance my food in take.

Any ideas?

Dave,

If I exercise too hard and don't get enough carbs, I'll burn off all my
blood sugar and then feel like crap for the rest of the day. I'm diabetic
and have known blood sugar problems. Back when I was younger, the same thing
used to happen a lot, and they told me I was "hypoglycemic."

The "two gram cure" that I have described on a page on my web site can often
head off low blood sugar disaster without causing a rebound high. For me
the trick is to catch the low blood sugar before it goes too low and causes
the rebound, so I will take the two grams of glucose right after half an
hour of exercise if I feel a bit off.

Default Tired of being tired...

I've been feeling very hungry after I eat lately and today
(11/03)after a 45 mins of exercise (Leslie Sansone walking video), I
was hungry and sleepy even after I ate my lunch (salad greens with
homemade LC ranch dressing, chicken, and shredded cheese). This
afternoon I read about the "2g cure" and figured that since I don't
have any candy type things I would have a glass or two of lemonade
sweetend with a few packets of Splenda. I felt better after awhile.
As a test, I had a glass of lemonade with my dinner tonight and now I
don't feel so hungry or tired. I may just drink lemonade more often.

Thanks for the info on your site, Jenny,

Corinna

Corinna,

Glad the suggestions was helpful, but how many grams of carbs is in the
lemonade? You don't want to pour too many carbs into the system because that
can set you up for a rebound low (and stall weight loss!) Anything over 4
gms would be counter productive, long term!

It's also possible that you were dehydrated after the exercise, which would
explain the lemonade helping.

duh...get off the low-carb diet then or at least increase carb intake
some! carbs are for energy. they are not evil. just make sure the
carbs you get are good ones (complex) and not stuff like white bread
and the like.

I have to disagree. I eat low carb every day (currently about 50g/day, a
bit higher on days I ride my bike over 2 hours), and I don't have any
energy issues not caused by lack of sleep. If anything, eating too many
carbs has the opposite effect on me -- the crash after the carb binge
causes me to have a lack of energy.

I use 4 packets of Splenda in 1 16oz glass of lemonade which is just
lemon juice and water and not presweetend. The box states that there
is less than 1g of carb per serving. I just started drinking the
lemonade yesterday. In regards to being dehydrated after the
exercising; I drank 2 16oz glasses of tap water within 1hr prior to
exercising.

Should I hold off on the lemonade?

A whole 2 hours a couple times a week! As long as you aren't riding
competitively and don't push yourself you can proabably eat anything.
I'm guessing Lance Armstrong didn't win the TDF by eating low carb
though.

This week, I rode 15 miles Tuesday (1 hour, 20 minutes), 20 miles Thursday
(1 hour, 40 minutes), I'll ride 40 miles Saturday (about 3 hours), and
I'll ride some Sunday (at least 15 miles but then I'll be at a park where
I'll ride my mountain bike; I plan on biking 3-3.5 hours). So, that's
about 9 hours of biking, at an average HR that's between 82-85 percent of
my max HR (for example, my average HR this morning was 150 bpm, which is
83% of my max HR).

Consider this: when I was on low fat (which I was on for over 15 years),
I biked less than I do now. The farthest I ever rode then was 50 miles,
and I HIT THE WALL during that ride. I've ridden many rides over 50 miles
this year, and I've never lacked energy. Ever.

Could Lance win the tour on low carb? I don't know. He's expending so
many calories that I don't think he can eat that many. He simply has to
be burning quite a bit of fat.
