Default South Beach Constipation

Has anyone experienced constipation problems with the South Beach Diet?
Before the diet, I started my day with Metamucil mixed in prune juice to
stay regular. Since starting the diet almost 3 weeks ago, my constipation
has become progressively worse. Please give me some input if you've stayed
with the diet, but conquered the constipation problem. As I've added small
amounts of fruits and grains, my weight loss has stopped, but constipation
has not.

They make sugar-free Metamucil, that's OK with most diets.

My method of coping with this particular side effect of changing my WOE is
probably not recommended, but I like it. Russell Stover makes marvelous
sugar free mint patties - taste a lot like York Peppermint patties and I
just love them. Whenever the need presents, I just eat one serving of the
candy, plus one extra piece and I'm guaranteed a result that some consider a
loathsome side effect. I think they taste better than Metamucil or MOM.

You should take:

1 tsp Oat Bran
1 T Wheat Bran
1 tsp Metamucil (sugar free) or Walgreens (sugar free)

With every meal.

You need to LUBRICATE your food, and HIGH PROTEIN does not have high
lubrication. So when you lubricate your food with Bran and psyllium it's
going to get rid of your constipation problems.

I've been eating basically the SBD diet for six months or more, even
before it was published. I did phase I for 2 weeks when I put a couple
of pounds back on. I never had a constipation problem, and it could have
been because I ate lots and lots of vegetables. Omelets with peppers or
zucchini and onions for breakfast; romaine/leaf lettuce salads with
chicken or shrimp for lunch, spinach and asparagus at dinner. Plus lots
of water. Mom was right: you have to eat your veggies!

I think constipation is an issue with all low-carb diets - it's been a
problem for me for the whole year I've been LCing.

I take psyllium husks in capsule form, swallowed with lots of water.
Is there any reason that Metamucil is better than the generic capsule
form? Why do people have to endure the 8oz. of grainy beverage when
two capsules are so much easier to swallow? I never understood this.

When things are getting "slow", I'll take two capsules of the herb
cascara sagrada before bed, and that seems to help get things moving.
I hate to be dependent on an herb for regularity, so I'd love to hear
other suggestions. Some people experience the opposite problem from
eating sugar alcohols - they don't seem to affect me, so I can't even
use constipation as an excuse for indulging in a sugar-free candy
bar...

Be sure to drink plenty of water - that's supposed to help.

I started using a small amount of bran--sprinkling it on various
things. Also, the SBD does allow some types of legumes, which may
be helpful.

Yes. The "8oz. of grainy beverage" is cheaper than the "two capsules."
