Atkins Diet May Have Killed Teen

Did you read that article? How can the Atkins diet be blamed for this? The host on the call-in radio here did a show spewing out all the same old crap about Atkins. The worst part was that she had researched Atkins (I believe her -- she's generally really good about that sort of thing) but obviously she didn't understand that research well because she talked about never again being able to eat onions or tomatoes or mushrooms. She allowed her callers to spew the same old myths about Atkins (you know, we spend all day shoving steak and eggs down our throats, then eating bacon-wrapped butter and chugging down glasses of cream) without saying anything. She kept saying things like "Atkins just doesn't let you have enough fruits and fiber", but then dismissed a pro-Atkins caller because "are you a doctor? no? Well, what do you know?" I wish I'd had my phone with me so that I could call in. I think that Atkins's biggest problem really gaining mainstream trust is all of the misconceptions and myths that surround the issue. If anything, what needs to happen is some real education and information to the general public about what low-carb diets are and aren't. I still recall radio commercials (on that same radio station) with the doctor saying "I can show you how to lose weight and eat all of the steaks, eggs, cheese, and real butter that you want". That's the image that people have about Atkins. -- - Drew Toronto, ON, Canada http://www.awh.org/ 227/214/199 (interim goal) "Mrs. Simpson, isn't it true that when no other food was available, your husband once consumed a 10-pound bag of flour?" |

Sadly, this will always be the case. Many of these reviews treat the
diet as a fanatical/radical approach which they claim cannot be sustained. How wrong they are. Unfortunately, low-carb has been misaligned by the Atkins approach. Does anyone here remember back in 1996 Dr. Mauro Di Pasqale's book for bodybuilders, the Anabolic diet? It too proved usefull, but was misalinged as another high fat/no-carb diet. If anything, this book created awareness of the low-carb diet in the fitness industry and introduced, the TKD and CKD variants. I still recall radio commercials (on that same

That's the image that people have about Atkins That's because that's exactly the image that Atkins put out in his first two bestselling diet books. It was only when other diet doctors started getting a piece of the bestseller pie that he modified his message, took ideas from their books, and modified his original pitch which was along the lines of "imagine losing weight on a luxuriant diet filled with steaks and cream." So the public misconceptions about Atkins diet are largely due to the way Dr. Atkins pitched it for years. Those of you who have only read the most recent books should dig up an old one at the public library and you'll see what I'm talking about. -- Jenny Cut the carbs to respond to my new email address! He championed the cause for 3 decades. What exactly are you saying? Misaligned? That's sounds like a problem with the front end of your car. I don't know what Atkins books you've been reading, or even why, since you do nothing buy try to discredit him and claim he didn't play the key role in making LC successful. I first read his book in 1974 and the whole concept and basis of the plan hasn't changed much at all. Back then it was start at 20g carb a day, then increase by 5g each week, just as it is today. He spelled out that eating salad, low carb vegetables, etc. was part of the plan. The only ones I've seen focusing on all the foods rich in fat are the media who almost never present the concept fairly. They show some guy with a refrigerator full of pork chops, sitting at the table eating steak covered in butter. |
