Default Setting Goals

I've never really been any good at this... I always reach too high and
fall too far if you get my drift. So here's something reasonable, I
think to start off with. Today is January 17, 2004. I am 5'4" tall and
currently weigh 257.75 LBS.

MY GOAL: By June 17, 2004, I'd like to loose 30 lbs. and weigh in at
227.

Hey, Micki,

That's a great goal and you can do it. Let us know how it is going.

I'd suggest doing a search on the 'net on goal-setting. I recently gave a
talk on this subject and found some really good stuff.

That sounds like a very reasonable and attainable goal. You may surprise
yourself once you get into a healthy eating and exercise routine by
exceeding your goals.
Keep us posted of your progress.

I find short term goals work better for me. For one thing, you can
achieve them and that makes you feel good and ready to set the next
goal. Whereas longer term goals tend to be easier to forget about.

Also, if you make the goals directly dependent on the scale, it can be
far easier to be disappointed. Not everyone's body loses weight in a
regular or quick fashion.

Might be better to set some goals for how often you exericise, or how
many healthy meals you eat a week.

Mind you, long term goals are fine too, but it's good to have those
in-between goals... and goals that aren't entirely focused on what the
scale says too.

Micki,

Iggi, hit on a great point, accountability. This group is one great big
coaching session, 24/7. You have no idea how much you would pay for group
coaching (or maybe you do), but you certainly won't get it everyday like
this place.

That's a reasonable goal. Doable and conservatiuve. If you accomplish
it, you will do better than most. Hang around here and mention your
goal in your posts often for some accountability...

Heh. I'm really starting to sound like a curmudgeon, but I don't like it.

The problem with setting a goal 6 months out is that people too easily
get discouraged when they realize they aren't going to make it (which
they realize by projecting out their current loss rate.)

Fact is, it takes time to work out the kinks. But no matter HOW long it
takes, it's worth working on having new diet and exercise habits be a
way of life.

What I *REALLY* hate is when someone says, "I started exercising and
eating right and it didn't work for me." So they quit. Um, how 'bout
try again? I mean, really, is anything ELSE supposed to work?

So, instead of just knocking you about, how about you set a goal for
this week to drink 8 glasses of water every day and exercise three
times. Can you do that?

I think you have the right idea. Setting a series of smaller goals is
often better than going for it all at once which can seem daunting.
Then, as you get to each goal you can assess how you feel and look
before you set the next one.
Good luck

Absolutely, I love my accountability here... I post my morning weight
every day... And in my mind, this gives me a bit of accountability,
even though probably no one gives a damn...

That's why I post the Food & Exercise stuff. For me, that's even more
accountability; I not only want to post a good weight, but I want to
be able to post eating and exercise that I can feel good about. I
know most people don't give a damn about what I eat or what exercise I
do either, but I do it for myself.

I think most of us enjoy your posts. We see it working for you and know
it's attainable if we put forth the effort, too. For those who don't give a
damn - screw them!
