where can you guys find exactly one mile?

i

I am married to a land surveyor. My regular running course was marked by
him and is accurate to within an inch in 10 miles

1 mile in 8:40....

That was my timed run this morning. :-)

12 weeks ago it was 11:29 (IIRC).

Awesome! I'm envious. My mile is down to 9:50 but I think I could go
faster if I pushed it. I haven't pushed it because I want to finish my
entire 3.5 mile run. I just registered for the last 5K of the year in

two
weeks. I'm thinking of really trying to keep up with the front pack for

as
long as possible to see how I do, but it's a cross-country race (off

road)
and I might end up killing myself doing that At least I know I

should
finish in 30 min or less.

Jenn

Just remember - that is a 1 mile only... not a 5k average per mile.
Distance running and my time will certainly slow down too. Pace

yourself.

We've been doing alot of 1/4 mile sprints in bootcamp, and that has really
helped with my time. Its a great training technique.

My mile time has gone down pretty regularly, I keep a log in my Palm. It
gives me an avg mile pace time with each entry. Out of habit I check my
watch after the first mile to see if I'm "on track" or not. My regular
running spot is downhill one way then uphill coming home so the first mile
is fastest. I usually do 3.5 miles in 36 minutes. I've done 3 miles in
exactly 30 minutes before. I do better on the road and on uneven (hilly)
courses, than on a flat (boring) track. I also try to do some sprints,
or fartleks, during the run letting either my body, mood, or music determine
them. It's worked well for me. I don't know how it will be on a treadmill
but I find out next week.

I have to laugh at this - as there have been many occasions I've
considered bringing home some of our survey equipment from work in
order to track out a 1, 2 and 3 mile courses from my driveway.

As for my run the other morning - it was done at the Y - There is a
stretch of road w/ a nice 12' pedestrian pathway. They've measured
out some standard distances so we have 1/4 mile up to a 4 mile way of
doing some runs on just that pathway alone. Its not as accurate as
Jenn's way - having been surveyed to the inch .. but its accurate
enough for the 5k run the Y put on earlier this month.

You mentioned music ... What do you use to listen to music with?

I've got my cd player but the pack I have to carry it with goes aroudn
the waist and I find that it jiggles too much that even the 45sec
anitskip can't keep up. I've tried to wrap it to my upper arm, which
works better but still skips or hangs alot. I'd love to find out
what other runners use for entertainment.

As for hills - in Florida - at least my area - there are no hills. I
like running on some of the soft pathways, but find they are a bit too
uneven for my liking and I'm worried about busting an ankle, so I
stick to concrete pathways. This is tearing up my shoes and
back/knees ... so, its time to look at other alternatives.

Yeah - I've considered picking one out to add to my "christmas wish list"
this year. Then its a matter of converting the MP3.

What - if anything - are people using this day for "sharing"?

can I estimate one mile with my truck's tachometer. I would drive
along a road with a sidewalk and stop when the tach reaches one mile,
then mark/remember that place. Are these tachs fairly accurate? I want
to try to beat JayJay's record here.

well, considering I'm a 5'3" girl - that shouldn't be too hard to beat.
When I ran with the class yesterday I was out front the entire first 1/2
mile. Then a guy in the class caught up to me and jogged along with me
until the last 1/4 mile when his pace spead up. Then next thing I knew - a
woman from behind came running behind me, and nearly caught that guy too -
she must have really paced herself extremely well the first 1/2 mile, as she
hung with the other bunch behind me, then the 2nd 1/2 mile she took off like
a jack rabbit.

Anyhow - i don't see why your car tack wouldn't work for this. Stop the
car, set the trip-tach to zero, then start, when you get to 1/2 mile stop
and mark that spot. Our run is a 1/2 mile up, turn around, then 1/2 mile
back. That turnaround slows you down a bit, as you have to do a stop/turn
not a swooping turn. Our run is from one stoplight to another stoplight.

Yeah, and this one especially isn't too good. I think I'll go back to That
T Woman.
