Default Food & Exercise -- 10/3/2003 (yesterday)

Last night we went to eat at The Inn at Little Washington, which is a
major recreational eating destination, of which I took full advantage
:-). Lots of calories, no regrets. It's one of the top-ranked
restaurants in the United States. This was the finale to my vacation
week from work. We also stayed at a nice B&B and had a yummy
breakfast this morning.

Food:

8:30 (home): 2 poached eggs on 1 slice whole wheat toast w/ 3 slices
melted f/f cheese

11:30 (home): apple

12:45 (home): 168g leftover turkey meat loaf w/ 3 slices melted f/f
cheese

6:30 (The Inn -- and I'm copying some of this from the menu): 4 little
assorted hors d'oeuvres, with a glass of sherry; various homemade
breads w/ butter; demitasse cup of apple rutabaga soup; "Porcini Pizza
with Fontina Cheese, Asparagus, and Virginia Country Ham", with a
Russian River Chardonnay; "A Marraige of Hot and Cold Foie Gras with
Quince Preserves", with a Muscat de Beaunes de Venise for the cold and
a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir for the hot; "Pan Seared Tenderloin of
Veal with Local Forest Mushrooms, Broccolini and Raviolis of Virginia
Country Ham and Fontina Cheese, with a Languedoc; the "Seven Deadly
Sins" dessert -- bite-size servings of seven of their desserts -- with
a Barboursville Phileo dessert wine; little basket with a couple of
sweets and candied fruits {They serve quite small portions of each
course, so it's possible to actually eat all this. And I ate every
bite :-).)

Totals (only a rough estimate and probably low): 2886 calories (386
from wine), 110g fat (34%), 249g carbs (35%), 141g protein (20%)

Exercise: Just some housework -- a fair bit, but light.

No. They serve fairly modest portions, and the food isn't really
over-rich. The flavor comes from great ingredients and wonderful
seasonings, rather than loading up on fat. I've gotten sick after
eating at lots of lesser restaurants, but never at the Inn.

I'm sooo jealous of you! The Inn is what folks call a "Destination
Restaurant". You would never get sick there, only feel elegant and pampered.
: ) The owner Marcel (forgot last name) writes wonderful cookbooks. Death By
Chocolate is my favorite. He also co-hosts a PBS cooking show.

Here in No. California, we have The French Laundry, which is considered
quite possibly the best restaurant in the US. It's way beyond my price
range, I'm afraid. But perhaps, some day.

Thanks for the report, Chris. I'll live it through you. : )

Well, actually, Marcel (something like Desaulniers) is the chef at
Trellis in Williamsburg. I've eaten there once -- also a wonderful
restaurant. But the chef at the Inn is Patrick O'Connell. The Inn is
probably more of a real "Destination Restaurant" -- and has the prices
to match :-) -- but Trellis is great too.

I've always heard good things about The French Laundry. And, as it
happens, we were just discussing it at the Inn the other night. The
couple seated next to us, whom we'd met at the B&B before dinner, were
from California and were out in Virginia just to visit wineries and
eat at the Inn. They told us all about The French Laundry; it's their
favorite California restaurant. They've recently retired and are
visiting the top 10 restaurants in the US (according to some list; I'm
sure they differ).

Things to look forward to when retired... : )
