Default milk and dieting

Ok, I've seen many posts in different groups about milk helps with the
weight loss... can any one of you tell me how much one should drink a day
and how it works exacly?

Since I am not following WW per say, I'm not really counting points so just
an amount of intake would be great.. It would give me an idea as to how much
it counts.

Thanks.

Melanie,

There was an article in Readers Digest a few months ago about milk and
dieting. I'll see if I can find the article & post the info. However,
don't hold your breath! I take way too many magazines and have lots to dig
through!

Apparently it's the calcium that matters. Just make sure you get the
RDA of calcium, preferably through milk cheese and other foods, but in
a supplement if necessary. Also check you get enough vitamin D, as
this is reuqired to metabolize calcium.
If you are trying to lose weight you should probably be taking a
multi-vitamin supplement to ensure you aren't missing anything due to
a restricted diet. If you are doing that you shouldn't need any other
supplements.

Here's the link to Readers Digest health articles
http://www.rd.com/common/nav/archive.jhtml I couldn't find the milk
article, but there are a lot of good articles listed here. Some of the
articles I glanced at 'preach' pretty much what WW tells us.

What I'm not clear on, on this dairy/milk/calcium weightloss concept
is it the dairy or the calcium and the combo. Something just posted
the other day seemed to indicate it was really the milk and not just
calcium. Then the question I have is if soy milk with calcium is as
good or should I stick with cow's milk (after reducing the lactose)

I've been told it was the calcium but the most common form of getting
calcium is by drinking milk. My leader said to add dairy products like
yogurt and cheese to my daily menu. Using supplements is not the best way to
get your calcuim. It really needs to be through mostly consummed products
for it to be effective.

I don't think anyone has really answered your question in regards to the
amount to get. WW guidelines, is two- three servings of dairy products per
day. That would be 2-3 cups of milk or other calcium rich foods that would
equal 2-3 servings.
