Hello

I am new here. I am 25 years old and 10 kg overweight. (sorry don't know how
many pounds that is). I saw the "food and excercise" messages. Sorry if I
sound a little stupid, but is that where everyone can post what they ate
during that day? (if that is so, I think it is brilliant!) I really need
some encouragement. I am not sure how I gained the weight, there may be lots
of reasons. I am not doing any excercise anymore, I have a soft spot for
restaurants, and I am (almost) addicted to coffee.

I think I'll start by stating what I ate during the day (my next message). I
hope that merely recording what I eat will help... and that I will make some
new friends.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the group JS. Yes, some people find it useful to log their
food and exercise. As you can see, sometimes other will add comments to
what you write. Some people find that useful and others, well... ;-)

I do find that recording what I eat is very useful in many ways. At
first it was more to help me with quantity (calories, portion size
estimation, etc.) and now I find it useful for tweaking things (gee, I
do better when I have x grams of protein and y grams of fiber). YMMV,
of course.

At any rate, welcome.

Beware that if you start posting your food and exercise logs, some
people will jump out and criticise what you ate, suggesting to replace
one food with another etc.

When you see that happen, remember that it is a natural consequence of
you posting those details. So, do not get upset too much about
this. If you find one person's opinion to be unpalatable, ignore that
person for some time. Take what you use and leave the rest. Pretty
much everyone wants to be helpful and share what works for them. When
taking advice from other posters, it helps to see if the advice is
internally consistent and if evidence is provided in support of it.

Interesting advice from someone who's posting history is not archived and
therefore his hypocrisy and incidents of really bad advice and bad behavior
are not available to the newer members.

Welcome, JS! I'm one of the people who posts Food & Exercise -- have
been doing it for about a year and a half. I find it really helps me
be accountable to myself for what I'm doing; I think it has been a
significant factor in my weight loss journey. Do join in! It can
also help you find patterns in when and why you overeat or skip
exercise (which you should begin, by the way :-) ).

Do you have any mechanism for determining the calories and nutrients
in what you eat? Lots of people here like the free tools at
fitday.com. (I use a spreadsheet that DH and I developed.)

Oh -- as Ignoramus wrote -- you need to expect occasional comments on
your food and exercise from others. People assume you want their
suggestions and you should take them in that spirit, but you need not
agree with them all. Don't be offended by those you don't agree with,
though :-).

useful! Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't mind any comments of what I post. I
assumed that most people would like to be helpful, but that not all of the
advice will work for me. Still I would like to know what others think of my
"self-discoveries".

I've read some of your past comments, and found it quite useful.

Hi Chris

Thank you so much for your friendly welcome. I would really appreaciate any
of your comments on my food and excer. postings.

Thanks also for the advice for determining the calories and nutrients
in what I eat. At this stage I think I will only use these postings to
measure how much I eat. But please, if you find any interesting patterns,
tell me.

Have a great day!

Well, there's two great places for you to start.

Adding exercise will do great things for you, and it doesn't have to be killer
exercise -- just a walk every day, perhaps of 20-60 minutes, whatever you think you
can handle at a brisk pace. As for restaurants, try choosing the healthiest things
from the menu, rather than what you "feel like" eating -- and ask for
modifications -- i.e. cream sauce on the side (or left off completely), dressings on
the side, broiled rather than fried, etc. You might be surprised at how much better
the food tastes without that stuffed lethargic feeling afterwards. I still eat in
restaurants but I'm careful about what I choose and how I order.
