Gatorade / Pedialyte
Ok, I got some sort of viruas that has me at a 101+ temperature. The
Doc suggested pedialyte or gatorade to rehydrate. I'm worried about the carb rush from either of them-- does anyone know of a low(er) carb version? Rob |

If you're looking for an electrolyte solution, I wonder if you're anywhere near a store that carries Champion Lyte. I'm worried about the carb rush from either of them-- does anyone know of a low(er) carb version? I am *not* a doctor nor do I play one on the Internet. The combination of carbs (sugar) and salt in oral rehydration therapy are there to open the receptors in the gut to absorbing more water. However, my brother-in-law (a medical doctor) says that Gatorade and Pedialyte are both sweeter than they need to be to increase palatability. If you do a Google search on "oral rehydration therapy formula" you can find a homemade version of the WHO version which has the minimum number of carbs needed to get the maximum amount of water into you. Unless you have diabetes, I think the dangers of dehydration are worse than the amounts of carb in the drinks. Particularly if you're eating less than usual due to illness. However, I'm not a doctor--consult your own doctor who knows you and your health. Shirley to reply via e-mail remove the trees from my address |
