Lows was My glucose tolerance test
Going low after a large dose of carbs is generally a sign that you produce more insulin than needed--usually an early indicator of a tendency towards insulin resistance, which is an underlying cause of type 2 diabetes. However, remember that 70 on the Relion is equivalent to 78.4 on a plasma calibrated meter, which is the one doctors refer to. That is almost normal. Plasma calibrated normal is 80-90. The confusion may come in because diabetics on insulin are told that they are low if they go under 90 or sometimes even 100. But for a person who is not on medication 80-90 is rock solid normal. Low on the Relion is in the low 60s and you'd definitely feel it. You'd feel shaky or starving or dizzy. People who go low in their 20s and 30s often get "normal" in their 40s about the time they start developing a "beer gut" figure and then develop type 2 diabetes later. In fact, the disappearance of hypoglycemia is a bad sign, though, ironically most people think it means they are "getting better." Checking your response to a known dose of carbs is far from useless. If you use it as a standard, you can see over time how your blood sugar response is behaving. You can also catch high blood sugar problems long before they get out of control. I just this week heard a terrible story of a relative by marriage who had a family history of diabetes but is a normal weight. He has just had to go dialysis! He is in his early 50s and has suffered diabetic kidney failure. He did not even know he had diabetes. This past month the doctors have tested 5 of his siblings with a glucose tolerance test looking for a kidney donor and so far all of the siblings have tested either diabetic or as having impaired glucose tolerance which makes them unable to donate. None of the siblings had any idea they had anything wrong with them. The men who tested abnormal are all close to normal weight and pursue physically vigorous lifestyles. -- Jenny - Low Carbing for 4 years. At goal for weight. Type 2 diabetes, hba1c 5.7 . My morning fasting BG was 78. Then I drank 52 grams of glucose at 7:25. At 8:35, ReliOn said that my BG was 126. Questions. 1. Am I in a bad condition. 2. Should I continue this test and measure at 2 hours or 4 hours? Or thi stest is good enough? i |
