Default Strange cravings for meat

Your body might be telling you that you aren't getting enough of some
nutrient. Are you getting enough protein? I used to get beef
cravings when I didn't eat enough protein. Another possibility is a
need for more iron.

A more obscure possibility is a need for creatine, which is mainly
provided in one's diet by red meat and fish. When I was lifting more
seriously (before my shoulder injury) I began supplementing creatine,
and I found my hunger for red meat declined a lot when I did so.

I find it that lately, I feel towards eating way more meat than I was
used to. I started wanting it yesterday. Today I spent 6 hours digging
dirt (making a garden) and then 2 hours walking. At the end I was
ravenous for some grilled meat, so I bought a couple of pieces at our
local grocery store (on the way back from my walk), grilled it and me
and my wife ate it. I ate lots, like 1/2 lbs of that great filet
mignon that I wanted to buy.

I used to not even like beef that much. These days I want to eat red
meat and eggs. All within my daily total food/calorie limit (I am
losing weight and I lost 45 lbs to date by walking and eating less and
no junk food/sugar), I just replace other things with meat. I guess it
could be related to my recent measurement of cholesterol with
cholestrak, which gave me a value of 128 (very low). Not sure what to
make of it.

By the way, we bought a very nice electric grilling machine at
walmart, for $34. It is much better than a gas grill, much cleaner and
there is no burning at the bottom etc.

When did you get the new grill?

I get cravings once in a while, usually they increase after I satisfy them
then I get sick of whatever it is and they go away.

What happened to your shoulder?

I hurt my rotator cuff doing a snatch -- my left arm went back too far
in the overhead position and I didn't let go when I should have. If
you don't know what a snatch is (and care :-) ), see:

What is creatine?

Creatine is a compound formed . It occurs naturally in some foods
(like beef), but many strength athletes take additional creatine. It
is believe to increase muscular endurance and hence to enhance
strength training. There also appears to be some evidence that it
helps maintain muscle tone in people with conditions such as lupus,
muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's
disease). All of these claims are debated in the literature. Here's
one of the better descriptions I found on a quick search. (Since most
are from companies selling creatine, they tend to be a bit slanted;
this is from an ALS site.)

chris,
aren't you worried about the negative medical concerns regarding the use of creatine?

Besides what Chris said, it has a good bit of potassium. No matter, as long
as you can fit in the 600kcal, 50G fat into your diet, you're fine. After
6 hours digging, I'd say you made up the for the cals.

Actually, there was very little fat in that meat.

Half a pound (if you really ate that much) of lean-only (visible fat
trimmed off) filet mignon has 460 calories and 21g fat (and 63g
protein). Filet mignon is one of the leaner beef cuts. (And my
favorite; I don't like fatty beef.)

What negative medical concerns are those?

As Chris wrote, creatine monohydrate occurs naturally in red meat. By
eating enough red meat, one can very easily (if not economically or
with dietary variety) saturate one's muscles with creatine just as one
can by using supplemental creatine. There's no magic there.

I've seen no significant evidence that there are any, and have
certainly not experienced any problems myself. The only thing I've
heard that appears to have any basis in fact is that additional
creatine can potentially overload the kidneys. This is easily managed
by drinking plenty of water -- something we should all do anyway.

I think you missed my point. WHEN did you buy it. This could correlate to your
recent cravings for meat.

it is a electric grill by HamiltonBeach from walmart.

$34. It has a nonstick surface. It is relatively large as far as
electric grills go. No burned meat, no burning in general, no soot
etc.

One would need to eat a LOT of meat to reach creatine
saturation. Preferably raw meat.

On the other hand creatine is synthesized internally and although
vegetarians show lower levels of it, it doesn't result in any sort of
deficiency, as long as the diet is not deficient in an essential
amino acid methionine.
