Well, I saw the doc this morning.

The MRI showed no sign of tumour! The pituitary was all normal tissue
- it seems I just have a pituitary gland that is 1/3 larger than the
normal maximum. The rest of my intracranial cavity was also quite
normal - I *do* have a brain and there's nothing physically wrong with
it (although I know some critics wouldn't agree g). Just another
incidence of my body showing weird development.

In some ways I'm a bit disappointed. While the concept of brain
surgery is terrifying, the possibility that such a tumour was causing
all my other problems and could be fixed in one go was something I
hoped for. Instead it seems I'm stuck on the treadmill of eating
less, exercising more and slowly gaining weight every time I turn
around.

It would have been nice to have had the reason I don't lose weight
wrapped up in one nice neat little package. I won't say I was looking
forward to Brain Surgery, but for a month or so DH and I had hope that
we'd found the reason for all the ills that LC doesn't seem to help me
with.

AH well.

I didn't tell myself 'to hell with it' and chow down on a big bag of
chips (although I wanted to). And I called the Women-Only Gym
(Fernwood for our Aussie contingent) that opened up right behind my
daughters' school and reinstated my membership. I'd actually taken it
out some months back - a 'special offer Foundation Membership' to get
a client base happening - but it didn't open until the day I had the
MRI. It seemed easier to suspend it until I knew what was going on
than try to deal with the learning curve there while I was stressed to
the eyeballs thinking about the possibility of surgery. Now I know
that's not an issue right now, I can get into the routine I plan on (3
days there in addition to my normal 3 days a week of Aquarobics) and
at least work on my fitness levels. Nothing wrong with being the
fittest fat lady at the gym!

Well. I don't know whether to congratulate you, or
commiserate with you - I know you were rather hoping
that removal of the faux tumour would clear some things
up for you.

However, no surgery and no abnormality have to count as
good things - so - congratulations!

April.

Aramanth,

Sorry to hear that the "explanation" didn't come through, but at least you
don't have to cope with brain surgery.

Is there some possibility that the extra size of your pituitary maps down to
some overproduction (or underproduction) of pituitary-related hormones?
Have you been able to get a detailed workup on those hormones to see if that
might have something to do with the inability to lose weight?

I do know how impossible it is to get the tests that might explain a
non-standard health problem, believe me! But given how hard you work at the
diet it seems obvious that some metabolic process has gone awry and there
must be some way of tracking it down via the symptoms.

I am very relieved that you are okay !
What a roller coaster ride you've experienced lately.
I know for myself.. the stress of that alone would have driven me to a
binge

Thankfully though.. you are healthy..
and now you know where you need to go from here as far as weight is
concerned.
Exercise and good eating .. you can do that With minimal side
effects and much less stress than a surgery.

Thanks, all, for the support. After a night's sleep, I'm feeling much
better.

I think the reason I was feeling a little low about *not* needing
brain surgery was that over the past month DH and I have been
working hard on the positives about it - particularly the possibility
that it might just wrap up neatly in one removable package many of the
health woes that plague me. When the huge, immovable object was taken
away, it's natural I would be a little off balance.

My sister and I were laughing about it this morning. My physiology is
already known to be oddball. My skull was proven some years back to
be about 1.5 times thicker than normal. My appendix turned out to be
7 times normal length. So, what could be more natural that my
pituitary gland was 1.3 times normal size?

I rang the Women-only gym I signed up for months ago and reinstated my
membership. I'd actually joined during their pre-opening 'sale' and
had been waiting impatiently for their projected opening in
August...which became September...which eventually turned out to be
the day of the MRI! So I suspended the membership until we knew what
was going on - but it is reinstated from Friday (tomorrow) when I'll
get my cardio and strength assessments (no worries there - my
Aquarobics teachers are always surprised at just how good those are
for someone my age and size) and have my complimentary Personal
Trainer session.

I'm not expecting it will help me lose weight any more than anything
else has thus far - but I can still be the Fittest Fat Lady at the
gym!
