Default 2 pounds in 24 days

I found out my BMR is 1321 calories/day. If I eat 1000 calories a day,
I will create a deficit of 300 calories/day. 3500/300 = 11.6 Since one
pound is 3500 calories, I will lose 1 pound in about 12 days. So...in
one month, I should lose about 2 pounds, if I eat 1000 calories a day.

Man o man, I really have to cut back on the calories. Starting
tomorrow, it's back to calorie counting because every calorie counts
when my goal weight is 95 pounds. I have to learn to live with a whole
new way of eating, namely a lot less.

Hmmm...I'm starting to think I really need to exercise. 1000 calories
is very little food. Let's see...if I walk about 2 km a day, I can burn
about 100 calories. This means I can eat 1100 calories.

It's going to be a slow journey for me. It's going to take at least 8
months for me to lose 20 pounds. It will be May by then.

I'm starting to think I should reward myself based on my efforts and
not weight loss. If I can follow my plan for one month I will do
something special for myself, what I don't know yet. Any ideas?

How about upping your exercise and reward yourself for any you do above
and beyond what you'd hoped to acheive? So, for example, you manage a
quick 500 calorie run, treat yourself to a 250 calorie reward or
something.

1000 calories doesn't sound a lot at all. Most diets recommend about
1500 calories to start don't they?
Why don't you try 1500 calories and see if you can shed a few pounds
with that level before trying something which will be much harder to
stick to.
2 lb a week will be ten week. Exercise plenty too but don't add on
calories for the exercise you've done - just stick to the 1500. A diet
shouldn't just be about losing weight, it should be about creating
healthy eating patterns for life.

Good rewards are books, magazines, bath treats.

BTW, how tall are you? My goal weight currently is 112 pounds and I am
5' 2" tall. Three weeks ago I cut back my calories from 1200-1300 a
day to 1120 a day. I now weigh 115.5 pounds, down from 117.5 pounds. I
have been at 115.5 pounds for one week. I am guessing if I continue to
eat 1120 calories a day I might reach my goal weight by December or
January.

Yes, the lower your body weight goal the less you get to eat.
Unfortunately the motto is "calories in, calories out."

Hmmm...I'm starting to think I really need to exercise. 1000 calories
is very little food. Let's see...if I walk about 2 km a day, I can burn

Another thing about exercise, the lower your bodyweight the less
calories you expend exercising. If I walk 4 miles (18 minutes per
mile), I usually only burn 275 calories (not the 100 calories per mile
average that most people use).

I am not saying exercise isn't good, I am just advising that since you
are at such a low bodyweight now, don't use the averages that most
people use for calories expended used when exercising. Be realistic.

Over two years ago, I was exercising much more than I do now (I was
running races), and I was down to 106 pounds, so exercise does help
one lose weight and maintain weight loss.

It's going to be a slow journey for me. It's going to take at least 8
months for me to lose 20 pounds. It will be May by then.

That sounds about right. But if you plan on being at 95 pounds for the
rest of your life, what is the rush? You are making a lifestyle
change, you might as well take it slow and get used to it.

I'm starting to think I should reward myself based on my efforts and
not weight loss. If I can follow my plan for one month I will do
something special for myself, what I don't know yet. Any ideas?

I reward myself each week by having one day when I eat whatever I want
(no counting calories), and I take a rest from exercise. I still don't
eat a lot that day (as my stomach is used to eating small amounts),
but at least I don't have to count calories that day.

I am a little confused. If your BMR is 1321 kcal/day, that is before any
type of moving/exercise at all. So, assuming you do not lie in bed all day,
you probably burn several hundreds of kcal/ day MORE than 1321.

In other words, yo do not need to drop to 100 kcal/day to create a deficit
of 300 kcal/day. I suspect eating around 1400-1500 kcal/day will be low
enough for weight loss.

Personally, I have lost 60 lbs in 9 months at 1500kcal/day plus exercise.

I am now maintaining at 1700 kcal/day at the same exercise level. My
maintentace level used to be 1850 kcal at tne new weight, but i got sick and
thus my metabolism is still off whack.

FYI, I am a 34, female, and weigh around 128 lbs/ 63 kg at 1.74 m height (I
think that's around 5'9''). I exercise about 5,5 hrs/week at the gym
(weights + cardio) and have a few lunch walks every week. I ride my bike for
an additional 1-2 hours a week for transportation.

Exercise makes weight loss a whole lot easier for most people -- and
as you note, lets you lose faster without starving yourself. But 2 km
walk (only a little over a mile) isn't very much exercise for a young
woman like yourself. Why so little? (I am 58 years old, and I run
4-10 km 3 mornings a week -- and spend an hour or two at the gym on
the other days. When I was working, I also went on lunchtime walks
with a friend most days, and we'd walk around 5-6 km each day. And
he's 56.) Can't you walk more than that, or start running or biking
or something? And how about some resistance training? For someone
like yourself who's already fairly light but would like a better
appearance, resistance training can really help achieve your goal.

It's going to be a slow journey for me. It's going to take at least 8

Rewarding yourself for sticking to your plan is a fine idea, providing
your plan is working. This means you do need to see some weight loss
happening as well. As to ideas for rewards, what do you enjoy that
doesn't involve food? Some people buy themselves a clothing item, a
new CD or book, a spa treatment, or some such.

Jenny weighs 119 pounds and doesn't exercise much. She is unlikely to
have a calorie deficit at 1500 calories/day.

No, No, No ---- please don't use food as a "reward"....find something
else that pleases you! Most of us have become overweight due to others
(moms, friends, etc.) rewarding us with food...as well as doing it to
ourselves.

We have to leave this type of thinking behind, and find other, more
healthy, ways of rewarding ourselves. This is just my opinion, of
course; but, I hope others in this great group will agree with me.

I lurk here often....and enjoy your posts....plus I'm definitely
learning a lot!!! Keep it comin'! --- Sue

Harris Benedict Formula
To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the
appropriate activity factor, as follows:

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation =
BMR x 1.2
If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) :
Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5
days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) :
Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or
2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

She stated her BMR is 1321 calories/day so with no exercise her
calorie needs are 1585.2 (unless I've really stuffed up the caculator)
With light exercise is becomes 1816.375 and so a calorie intake of
1000 is way too low.

How tall is she?
http://www.dieting-review.com/BMI.jpg
If she's over 5'7 she's underweight and if she isn't then she's the
right weight and any issues she has may with weight may be about
distribution of that weight rather than the total. That can't be
solved by radical dieting of 1000 calories a day.

If you get to a point in a diet where you're within your BMI and you
can't shed any more weight then you need to look outside the whole
issues of diet and look at body acceptance and tone up if you are
unhappy with your shape.
