So far I've experienced no laxative effects from any of the sugar free candies-
no cramps, nothing. My gut must be made of steel!

sugar-free chocolate has taken as little as two hours to run through me,
when I ate some right before doing 90 minutes of cardio. And the waste
smells like burned rubber!

Results at an informal poll held here earlier this year showed that the
people who don't have the digestive problems process the sugar alcohols as
carbs.

Digestive problems means that your body doesn't process them, and no blown
diet.

YMMV

Sadly I learned I was one of the people that absorbs them

I ate a candy bar and had no side effects whatsoever

Oh well...

I don't have a problem with the Reese's no sugar Peanut Butter cups if I
don't eat more than two. More than that leads to gas. But I also know that I
metabolize sugar alcohols as sugar since they don't give me the runs and
larger doses of sugar alcohols raise my blood sugar on my diabetes meter..

When eating the Reeses sugar free peanut butter cups I count every sugar
alcohol gram as a gram of real carbs when logging my daily input. They are
6 grams per cup. The reason I eat them is that 1) the calories are lower
than the regular kind and I count calories. 2) Now that I'm not eating much
sugar they actually taste better than the "real" ones since they aren't as
sweet. 3) I've always loved peanut butter cups and these are "safe" to eat
because I am very motivated not to eat more than two. The real things are
much easier to pig out on.

However, it's important to note that I'm in maintenance now so there is room
for 12 grams of snack on my food plan. These could easily derail weight
loss for someone who can tolerate them and hence metabolises the carbs as
carbs.

Unfortunately, that usually means your system is digesting them like
carbs,

.... or so the theory developed here in ASDLC goes.

Frankly, I'm not sure that's true at all. While I can't eat anything
with lactitol due to the laxative effect, I do just fine with
maltitol. And the occasional low-carb chocolate bar has had no effect
of my weight loss or my blood suga whatsoeverr.

Be careful about passing on theories batted around in Usenet groups as
hard nutritional fact.

Or you're not overeating them. The only ones that gave me a problem were
SF gummy worms and jelly beans, which apparently have a higher concentration
of sugar alcohols, just like the regular ones have more sugar than chocolate
does.

I'm a bit concerned about that one, myself. While our little poll did
provide anecdotal evidence that people who don't suffer side effects may be
more likely to stall from sugar alcohols, it was far from scientific proof,
and at best could only be a rough generalization.

Further confusing, both maltitol and lactitol products in the past (and
present) have caused me digestive problems, but for some inexplicable
reason, the new Hershey's products don't seem to bother me, AND they don't
seem to cause any weight loss issues. I haven't tested my blood sugar after
eating them, but they don't make me have cravings or get munchy, so I tend
to think they are not causing me to have a glucose or insulin spike.
