Celebrities (male) with "obese" BMI's
"CarbAddict" wrote in message ... According to www.consumerfreedom.com "Obese" being BMI over 30... Will Smith, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Matt LeBlanc, Sammy Sosa FYI, celebrities, like everyone else, fluctuate. Will Smith in "I Robot" is not as his physical norm. Tom Cruise in "Mission"Impossible 2" is not at his norm. I've seen pictures of Arnold before he got back in shape for Terminator 3 that shocked me. Just try comparing Sylvester Stallone in "Rocky IV" to the Sylvester Stallone of the "Rocky" era. Still, for those with body image issues, I thought the information might help. At the end of the day, look in the mirror. Better yet, take a picture and look at that. doesn't a BMI just take your weight and height to figure it out? Wouldn't someone that's very muscular, like a bodybuilder have a silly BMI that would make them seem 'obese' by the numbers? |

Even when Stallone gained some weight to play a cop he still wasn't very fat, just fat for him. Arnold used to gain weight for body building purposes. Totally different way of controlling your body. BMI is meaningless to people like Arnold and many others. Curt |

But obviously, these people are not obese. BMI is not a useful index for exceptionally muscular people. T. |

Wouldn't someone that's very muscular, like a bodybuilder have a silly BMI that would make them seem 'obese' by the numbers? Yes, this whole thing is a joke. No it isn't. It is a simplified way of determining the body fat level of an average person. Body builders, athletes, etc., are not average. It is a far simpler guide to fat ratios than immersion or other rather complicated methods, and without it, many people would simply refuse to admit that they had a problem. Unless you have a higher percentage of muscle than normal, then it will apply to you. The people named are not overweight. Even when Stallone gained some weight to play a cop he still wasn't very fat, just fat for him. Arnold used to gain weight for body building purposes. Totally different way of controlling your body. BMI is meaningless to people like Arnold and many others. But not for the majority of people on these newsgroups, for them it is good starting point and a permanent reference while they are actively losing weight. Regards David |

BMI *is* a joke. Any measurement system worth anything would have to
be relatively accurate to the third standard deviation which would encompass approx. 98% of the population, the remaining approx. 2% being well away from the norm. BMI seems to be ridiculously off in a much larger percentage of subjects than the relatively ideal 2%. I may be about 3 or 4% above my personally considered "ideal" weight, which is not even close to being technically obese, but as soon as I calculate my BMI I am obese ie. over 25. This is nowhere near where it should be because I have a larger muscle mass than the average. The kicker is that I may have a bit larger muscle mass than the average but I am not all that much bigger than the average. And the various methodologies for calculating BMI may give me a range of values from as low as 20 to as much as 35 or more. That is way too wide a range to be useful. Which is it 20 or 35? Too wide a range. The BMI calculation must take into account as accurate an estimation of lean body mass, especially muscle mass, as possible, and it fails to do that in even a basic way. The best references for losing weight, IMHO, is in this order: 1: a simple tape measure 2: clothing size 3: an accurate scale 4: photos 5: a mirror TC "J. Regards David It is completely inaccurate in every way. My BMI should be between 140-190 being that I am 6'2". What the hell does that tell me? Nothing. It is a 50 pound range for goodness sake. On top of that, what if I was someone who lifts weights all the time? The numbers would be meaningless. It is much better to do a fat test like Jackson and Pollack or something. But hey, if you just like looking at numbers for motivation go for it. Curt |
