It's a beautiful fall day. I live 1/2 block from a huge wooded park with
miles of running/skiing trails. I have a labrador puppy and a small boy
with a bike. I decided to go running.

snip

First off - now we're going to have the puppy wizard psycho troll from hell
in this group from this getting crossposted to a.p.d.b by the dog guy.
UGH....

Ok - as for the dog. A couple things to keep in mind here. Chloe is very
regular. Will poop 2x a day - both on walks, both time will be about 4 to 5
houses down the street. So, if I go for a 1 mile walk with her she's
guarenteed to do the poop about 5 h's down, I pick it up, then when I walk
back past the house again, I toss the bag into the driveway and continue on
the walk. BUT.. if I run, then there's something about the running that
will cause the poop to come out earlier and more often. The action must
joggle it down the pipes and push it out. :-) So, if i'm going to run,
I'll carry an extra baggy with me, because I know she's gonna do the dirty
deed.

One tip I picked up from obedience training. Spend 5 mins walking the dog
and havign it go potty before beginnign the training session. So, if I'm
going to go for a run, I'll spend the 5 mins at a brisk walk pace, down the
street to where she's got to poop. Usually by that 5th house, its been a
few mins, and i consider that my "warmup" for the run.

But for the run, i'll carry the extra bag. Once its tied, I can't smell it
that bad. Once Chloe has gone potty, then i'll put her on a "heel" and
expect her to trot nicely next to me, and not be trying to sniff everything
in the world. This took training. But, Chloe also has her walks where
she's allowed to sniff and explore (those are the ones that take 15 mins to
go 1/2 mile.

Another thing for you to consider on these runs. Let her go in the
neighbors yard. Pick it up, carry it with you to the park, and if it
stinks too bad for you, who's saying you can't stop by the woodside and toss
the contents of the bag into the woods. (not the bag, that would be
litering). Then tie the bag up, and stow it away.

Oh, if your son's w/ you and on his bike - well, what I've done when biking
is carry the bag, tied to the cross bar on the bike. When its full, I'll
tie it back there securly.

If you don't want her pooping in the neighbors yard because you feel
uncomfortable w/ the dog sqatting there - then spend 5 mins walking her on
leash in your yard to poop before you venture on your run. Then you shoudl
eb able to make it past there house and maybe the dog might go again while
you are on the run in the woods. (but, in all honesty, out of curtousy to
the other people who enjoy that path, if she goes on the trail, you should
clean it up. Otherwise you give a bad name to dog owners and you may find
that they prohibit dogs on the trails because too many owners don't clean up
after them.) jmho :-)

This post is nice and long, and should give you ample options to work with.

Another thing to keep in mind - she is still a puppy. Make sure you bring
her water and stop to water and rest her every 15 mins of the run, And you
probably shouldn't make the run any more than 1/2hr to 45 mins or y ou might
be over working her. Watch for signs of her wearing down. When Chloe is
done with her walk, she starts to nudge me with her nose as her sign to me
that she wants to turn around. (she does the same thing if she wants to go
in a different direction that i am going). She's great at giving me
signals. Then again, we've been doing at least 2 walks a day since last
january, (minimum of 1/2 mile each, usually a mile or more). She's gotten
pretty trained at the walking and jogging.

And my dog ruined it. Just like three out of the last four times, she
stopped to **** in the same yard just before we got to the park. She
could **** ANYWHERE in the woods and I wouldn't have to carry it for a 1/2
hour run, but NOOOOOOOOO, she stops to **** on my neighbor's nice
grass. Today my neighbors were outside and I'm running as fast as I can
and DRAGGING her so she won't stop. Didn't matter. Stopped to **** in
front of them. (By the way, these people are in my same field and
actually used to be my employers and I'm a bit intimidated by them.)

I picked it up in the plastic baggie I carry for this purpose and dragged
her back home, yelling at her the whole way. I then tied her sorry ass to
a tree and went running without her. (The kid wisely escaped when he saw
his mother frothing at the mouth.)

I am so seriously ****ed. I am NOT going to go running with this dog if
she insists on ****ting on their lawn no matter what time of the day we
go. Does anyone have any ideas? She's taken to ****ting three times a day
with this extra special "when we go running" **** added to her
schedule. I wouldn't mind if she did it in the woods (we're in the woods
for over a mile!) but she has never, ever, ever, ever gone **** in the
woods. Not once.

Ideas?

BTW, yes, this is the same dog that was eating all items (including
non-food items like my makeup bag) from the counter. I tried
booby-trapping my counters: I put peanut butter in an aluminum pot lid
along with some coins and metal washers and balanced it precariously on
the edge of the counter. She dumped it twice but the third time is still
sitting there. I feel like we made some progress on that one.

hello Wendy,

read this,

"The dog is driven to do things which are fun and exciting and which
will bring him pleasure. The modern suburban middle class American woman
is driven to reign in, control, stifle and suffocate anything which
might cause her public censure or, far worse than that, embarrassment. A
fate worse than death. What the dog thinks or feels about all this is
irrelevant. The dog is merely a pawn in a game he does not understand.

Every day across America, a culture clash is raging between combatants
at disparate ends of the leash. While the dogs sees it as perplexing and
frustrating, for the woman, it is very much a war."

I hope this heelps explain your situation for you.

BTW,

Paulette and shelly,

this does not apply to you, Paulette, because you are not middle class.
You are more of an upper class cape cod area dog socialite, and it does
not apply to shelly either, as you shelly are in a very low, downtrodden
white trash socioeconomic category in one of the poorest counties in the
midwest.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Okay, first of all, you seem to have a serious problem with your temper.
Dragging and yelling at the dog will have made NO sense to her, it will only
have terrified and confused her, and it certainly won't help the situation.
If anything it will make it worse--she will only see it as punishment for
doing something she needs to do--poop--not for pooping in a specific place.

Thanks for the insight. Actually, if you looked closely, I was looking
for ways to stop her from pooping in an inappropriate place. It had
occurred to me that frothing at the mouth wasn't the best method. Hence
the post asking for ideas.

Second, depending on how young she is, your puppy shouldn't be running with
you yet anyway. Puppies shouldn't be taken for long runs on leash while they
are still growing.

Yes, I know. She's just over a year old now and I got the go-ahead to go
on 1/2 hour runs with her. I've been wanting to do this all along but
didn't out of respect for her growing bones.

It just so happens that the DISTANCE you are from your house to your
neighbors coincides with the exercise induced need for her to poop. She
can't help it.

That really makes sense. Except for the part that I went in the OPPOSITE
direction on my loop a few days ago and she waited until we were nearly
home, at the very end of the run, to poop in this same neighbor's yard. I
had taken her off the trail in the woods approximately 5 times asking her
to poop. I thought we had her trained to poop on command, in fact, and it
is clear to me now that we only were good at predicting when she needed to
poop anyway. I also think she just prefers their lawn: it's really nice
thick grass that they spend a lot of time on. In fact, it's pretty much
the people who would LEAST tolerate abuse of their grass.

If she needs to poop, and is old enough to really jog with you, how about
jogging a few circuits of your yard first--enough for her to poop in YOUR
yard before starting off?

This is an excellent suggestion. Boring, but good. I'm always anxious to
get into the woods on the nice trails and hadn't thought of it. Thanks to
Jayjay for the suggestion of using it as a warm-up, too.

You can either take it with you--wear a fanny pack,
tuck it in there and turn the fanny pack around to the back and you won't
know it's there

That's another nice suggestion. Even in the woods (where it's my fondest
hope she'll go) she might choose the trail itself and then I'd still have
to pick it up. (Yes, Jayjay, I'm a good citizen, don't worry.)

If this is how you approach all of life's minor problems I sure feel sorry
for your dogs!

I'm not sure you have enough info to judge yet, but I see your point. By
the way, I didn't cross-post this, I posted it to a group where the people
know me (and my dog issues) and several of them run with their dogs,
too. Some "helpful" stranger chose to cross-post it to a group I don't
read. This will be my last cross-post.

Well, I do post to both groups. (in rpdb I'm "Chloe's Mom" and not a real
prolific poster) and although rpdb has its fair share of netkooks, it is a
very helpful group. As many know, Chloe "fell" into my life last January
totally unexpectedly, and its because of groups like rpdb and other dog
groups that I've come as far as I have with her. They have been a great
deal of help and can offer some good advice.

On the other side, I also personally know Wendy and know that she is a good
parent and caretaker of her dog. (who she got about the same time as I
found Chloe). And I know that Wendy was just frustrated today, and her
post was not meant to be posted to the rpdb group.

We all struggle with our dogs - after all - that's the purpose of rpdb, to
help us humans learn how to understand our canine friends and their
behavior. And help each other learn how to redirect that behavior when it
needs redirection.
