LC and creatine
Does anyone know the mechanism through which creatine works? I was
considering taking some to aid my workouts. I'm currently doing a sort of PSMF and TKD at the same time. I seem to be sore for a longer period of time compare to when I wasn't doing LC and am trying to figure out the right quantity of carbs to aid in replenishment. Anyway, would creatine uptake properly with or is this going to be worthless? Is it going to register as a sugar, or something else? Thanks for any tips, Mark -- 260/234/200 since: 18/01/2005 month-start: 235 monthly-goal: 12 http://www.delorie.com/health/asdlc/ |

... Magic potions are not the answer to your problems. So the answer to my problem is an comment that does nothing to answer my question? Is PSMF and TKD (which I stated I'm already doing) the answer to my "problem"? Mark -- 260/234/200 since: 18/01/2005 month-start: 235 monthly-goal: 12 http://www.delorie.com/health/asdlc/ |

I understand what creatine is, but I was wondering about its use specifically on an LC diet. I was hoping someone had some experience with using it while in ketosis and whether they found it useful. Most searches relate to its uses and research on its effectiveness. Mark |

Creatine tends to cause your muscles to draw in water, whereas LC tends to force the water out. In that sense, creatine and LC work against one another. Also, if you're eating goodly portions of red meat while on LC, you may not really need creatine. Your body, your science experiment (i.e., try it and see if it works for you). But I do have to agree with JC a bit here. You're doing a PSMF and mixing that with a TKD and now you're wanting to add creatine. Frankly, it does seem like you're looking for magic pills. You can skip the PSMF and just do LC with a higher carb level to support your workouts. Then count calories to aid with weight loss, while maintaining about a 500 kcal/day deficit to lose 1 lbs a week. |

"JC Der Koenig" wrote in message ... Creatine and it's derivatives can be obtained by eating enough red meat and other proteins, so on a low carb diet it's doubtful that it will really help you. Also, since you are low carbing, you are depleting the water levels in your muscles which the opposite of what excess creatine tries to accomplish. The use of creatine supplementation is best when one is trying to bulk up and when one is taking in plenty of carbs and when one may not be taking in enough protein to accomplish what extra creatine supplementation may provide. Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I didn't realize that creatine wasn't going to be as useful on a lowered carb diet, which was the reason for my initial question. Mark |

Then count calories to aid with weight loss, while maintaining about a 500 kcal/day deficit to lose 1 lbs a week. The reason for the extra protein is to support a 4-day/wk workout program (not unusual, I know). I was just having a hard time cutting calories and getting enough protein through real foods. I supplement with whey protein drinks (and enjoy them) but it's hard to eat all lean meats (pork, chicken, etc) all the time so I tend to get the "excess" calories through all the other things I eat.. cheeses, eggs, etc. I employ the TKD portion of it just to get some extra carbs for energy during the workout. I'm still tweaking the amount to take, but I feel it helps me maintain my stamina. I don't "hit the wall" when lifting as quickly. I use the acronyms because people are familiar with it, but I wouldn't call this a "magic pill". I have modified some diets to suit my needs and was wondering if creatine would provide extra benefit for getting a couple of extra reps. It seems that, on an LC diet, it won't provide me much help. When I was strictly lifting (and not dieting), I took creatine and I felt it worked but I wasn't sure of bothering with it while LC'ing since I seem limited by other factors. I certainly don't want anyone to think I'm looking for shortcuts because I am, as I'm sure everyone is, working hard on this new way of life. I've always enjoyed lifting and don't like the limited feeling I have on LC. Once I hit my target weight I'll most likely modify my diet to gear it more towards weightlifting again. For the time being I'm sticking with mostly anaerobic lifting, and only aerobics to warm up. As you said, I'm my own best science experiment and that's what I'm doing. Thanks for the response, Mark -- 260/234/200 since: 18/01/2005 month-start: 235 monthly-goal: 12 http://www.delorie.com/health/asdlc/ |

Thanks for the response, Mark Now is a perfect time to train for strength, and not worry so much about those last couple of reps. More sets, fewer reps, etc. Good luck with it. |
