Carbs aren't usually one of the foods that causes indigestion and
heartburn. Just starting a healthy eating plan often eliminates the
foods that are the main contributors.

Begging your pardon Beverly, I use a fair amount of fat but since
having to exclude refined carbs have no heartburn.

When I ate pizza with bread, I had heartburn.

I sometimes eat pizza now, but without the bread. Just the cheese/meat
part. No heartburn. Same applies when I eat large amount of fat,
I never have heartburn.

I think that we have to accept that many things cause heartburn, not
just one. Being obese is one factor, eating carbs mixed with fat is
another, chocolate could be third, etc.

but chocolate is a sacrement!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to clarify my statement, so you don't continue to misquote
me: I refer to REFINED carbohydrates. I would NEVER recommend cutting
out carbohydrates...

Logical fallacy - Reducing does not equal "cutting out".
But once you'd made that error you started on a roll of
error building on error:

I would even suggest that one increase intake of
complex carbohydrates. I do and have so far lost 14 pounds with no sign
of stopping, so don't insult my intelligence by associating my posts
with the Atkins garbage!!

The only "Atkins garbage" around here is your own false
idea of what it means. Refer back to your logical fallacy
above - Assume something untrue that build an incorrect
stance about the topic. But do resume making comments
about Atkins any time you get to the point you can make
correct ones.

Me too. I found when I was on Atkins that my heartburn and acid reflux
disappeared completely.

And you know what? I found the same thing on my current low-calorie,
relatively high-in-carb diet that I've been on for 20 weeks now!

I think it is overall diet and stopping the overeating that helps, not carbs
per se. At least for me.

One of the elements of my regime has been to cut out unrefined

TODAY, when I had a Lean Cuisine pizza for supper. Now I sit here

Interesting, hey?
I guess I will have the occasional thing like that until I finish
"eating the freezer down" or can give the stuff away to friends.....
then I can make up my own freezer pizzas with whole-wheat crusts!
14 pounds down this morning and a full pants size!

I don't know whether it's due to cutting out unrefined carbs or just
to a healthier diet overall. Once I started dieting I totally stopped
having problems with indigestion or reflux -- which I used to have
pretty severely sometimes due to a hiatal hernia. And I didn't follow
a low-carb approach nor cut out refined carbs (though I do limit them
since they're pretty much useless calories).

This reinforces what my dr. told me to do about my esophagitis, avoid fatty
food. I've also given up caffeine entirely now. Haven't had an attack
since June yet I eat plenty of carbs. Go figure.

My brother has esophagitis, and when he went on the Atkins diet and
started eating a lot of fattier foods he had serious problems with it.
He does much better limiting the fats in his diet (though he doesn't
seem to stick to that as well as he might).

Caffeine is a problem for a lot of people with this condition, as is
alcohol. For me, I think fats make the most difference.

When I started low-carbing (January 2004), my heartburn/reflux went
away immediately. I couldn't believe it, actually.

DH and I went on vacation this past spring to an all-inclusive place
in the Dominican Republic, and the food there was really, really bad.
Even the salads sucked. But the breads were all to die for, so I ate
quite a bit of that. And I had heartburn the whole week.

When we got home again, I went back on protein and veggies, and the
heartburn totally went away again.

Jo Anne
