A thought on chocolate cravings
On 11/7/2003 11:13 AM, Ignoramus14327 wrote: crafting mom mentioned that she sometimes has chocolate cravings. There is "baking cocoa" for sale at Sam's club, which is basically just ground cocoa. Because there are no cheap components added (dry milk and sugar) it is kind of pricey, about 8 dollars per pound. On the other hand it is a pure product. Ig, you mean a drink like --- let me think -- HOT CHOCOLATE? :-) Hot chocolate = unsweetened cocoa (about 1 tablespoon to 1 cup milk), milk, sweetener of your choice -- jmk in NC |

I wonder if anyone with such cravings could just make a drink with that pure cocoa and see if the craving goes away. I do not have chocolate cravings anymore, otherwise I would try to do this experiment with myself. i I mentioned that it is chocolate ALMOND cravings. When it's just a chocolate craving, trust me, I eat half an UNSWEETENED chocolate baking square (I like those - I don't need no steenkin drink) and it will satisfy the craving. However, like I already mentioned, I simply eat the chocolate covered almonds in the 4 days prior to my (irregular, unplanned) period, and on the day of my period's arrival, the craving goes away, and I actually abhor the thought of chocolate or almonds. Both are very high sources of magnesium, which sometimes women need more of during their period. It satisfies my craving in a way which does NOT interfere with my regular way of eating, and like I mentioned, I am starting to lose the 5 pounds I gained over these past 2 months. It's a woman thang. My body knows what it needs and will not shut up until it gets it, LOL. cm -- Drop everything and do it my way |

Pretty much, sans the sweetener. I am just interested in finding out if the craving is for sweet chocolate as opposed to just cocoa. I could finance this clinical study by giving $8 to crafting mom if she tries it. Way ahead of you. I like unsweetened chocolate, with no sugar, no sweeteners. Stuff that everyone else would make a pucker face at, I actually love and enjoy. THAT is not what I crave during *my* period. It is chocolate covered almonds. cm -- Drop everything and do it my way |

Where do you buy unsweetened chocolate? Bakers brand unsweetened chocolate squares. Ingredients pure chocolate. In the baking section of my supermarket. I would like to buy some but could not find any. The "sugarfree" chocolate all has sweeteners that I do not care to take. Yep. I often make my own unsweetened chocolate almonds. I melt a square over some almonds, freeze to harden, and then eat. THAT is how desperate the chocolate almond craving gets before my period. So no, it's not the sweet that I crave, but in a pinch, I'll take it. cm -- Drop everything and do it my way |

Thanks jmk and crafting mom, I will check. I saw "semisweet" chocolate and such, but that is not what I was looking for. Will check again. Check for the blue colored box of unsweetened chocolate squares. I agree, the semisweet is not what you want. The ingredients should say simply: chocolate. cm -- Drop everything and do it my way |

I've been using it for years, and have only had a period maybe twice since my 6 yr old daughter was born, due to letting my shot lapse. I LOVE DEPO. det |

I guess it's another ymmv. det It took a while to catch up (or for me to notice), but I started feeling more angry/aggressive/bitchy, starving when I got my shot, and suffered--much to my DH's chagrine--loss of libido and was as dry as the sahara. I normally wouldn't share such info, but after talking with other woman, I found they were feeling the same things, but didn't know why. My doc said it may have been the combo of the Depo and the inhaled steroid I take for asthma--steroids can enhance the effects of hormones. I'm now taking a BC with estrogen, and it has helped a lot--with everything. And yes-YMMV--my sis would never give up her shots, come hell or high water. Amy |
