Starting again
I started the atkins over 3yrs ago before the advertising blitz that we see
now. I lost around 60lbs on the diet along with working out regulary 2-3times a week. Then I stopped the diet and kept working out and the weight stayed off for almost a year. Then about nine months ago I started an intense school and have not had time to work out either. It has all caught up to me now and i have gained back thirty pounds. I look like hell and feel about the same. Right now I am looking for motivation to get back on the diet. I am finding it extremely hard. Can anybody in the group share their experience with this situation. Thanks Patrick 192/192/160 |

Everybody has a point where they say "enough" and turn back. It'll be easier for you if that's now. LCing since 12/01/03- Me- 265/230/140 & hubby- 310/258/180 |

Patrick,
Don't expect the dramatic weight loss in the first couple weeks that you experienced the first time. However, I did better this time than last, mostly because I learned a lot more about various metabolic issues and addressed the problems that had given me trouble the first time around. http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/offplan.htm talks about what happens when you go off the low arb diet and then start it back up. It might help you get through the first couple days. -- Jenny - Low Carbing for 4 years. At goal for weight. Type 2 diabetes, hba1c 5.2. Cut the carbs to respond to my email address! Starting again
Patrick, I too am starting again (4th day of induction). I had very good success 2 years ago. I had lost about 40 of the 80 lbs I wanted to lose and was feeling quite good ... my appetite had decreased substantially and I rarely had sugar cravings... I had even started walking for exercise.. Then I had a rash of personal issues and illness.. and promptly retreated to my soothing carbs for the cure... (I grew up with carby food as the remedy for all ills).. yes, I did gain all my weight back and fell back into feeling sick and tired all the time... all that being said, I believe in the low-carb wol ... for me, it has produced the best results I have ever had... hands down.. and that is why I am back.. and already I feel I am getting into the groove as a side note, I'd like to comment on this NG. When I last frequented this group it was more or less interesting and helpful.. of course there were some "issues" as there are with all groups... however, now, this NG seems to have more than its' share of trolls and folks who obviously have no interest in LC other than to bash it.. and they are quite happy to let you know their opinions in rather harsh and rude fashion... Starting again - Long
I lost 143 pounds in 1996 and kept it off until I had some serious back
problems and had to have surgery in 2001. I had been working out 6 days a week weight training and running (4-6 miles per day) but had to stop excercising. I was even unable to swim until the incision healed. My lowest weight was 210 but I had settled in at 230 and felt great and thought I looked good as well. After the pain meds were taken away (I was on duragesic patches) I realized I was still in pain and have been living with chronic pain ever since. I'm only able to walk about 2 blocks before the pain gets so bad I have to stop and rest. I've decided that the weight gain, although not entirely responsible for my pain, is not helping. I think the thing that made me decide to get back to a sensible weight was when I went to schedule a new MRI and they had to send me to a hospital out of the city because I'm too big for their machine. I started lo-carbing last wednesday and have lost 13 pounds. I know that much of it is water but I don't care. The last time around I lost my weight on a protein-sparing modified fast. It was quick and relatively easy. No choices make for easy choices. I know that I could never do that again as easy as it was. It's hard to go back to something thats so draconian. I have had no trouble staying on this plan and have no intention of ever going off of it. I don't see myself on a diet but in a new lifestyle. As much as I love cake (yum), bread and potatoes, I hate the way I feel. I have a partner 13 years younger than I who's very supportive. He takes great care of himself (he's a physician) and I want to be able to do things with him like hiking and cycling. We're both very outdoorsy. It's been a great help to have someone in my life that takes good care of himself as an inspiration. In short, if you feel bad enough you'll do it. And surround yourself with positive friends and family that feel good about themselves. Don't let others bring you down. If you don't have that kind of support, look to this NG and others to help. Yes there are people here ( I've already run into a few) who are negative, but ignore them and look to the good folk for help. Finally, if this Atkins for you in the past, great. Maybe South Beach would be a better choice if you have negative feelings about doing it again. The iportant thing is to choose something that you can live with even when times get tough. The diet I lost all of the weight on the first time was not that kind of plan. Best of luck. -Bear -- Grrrrrrrr : o) Began Lo-Carb Atkins/South Beach 1-26-04 297/284.5/210 "patrick" wrote in message ... Did great on Atkins early last year, stuck with it pretty well for some months, then started to slide because I didn't think I really had to pay attention and some medical problems. About Sept got completely derailed, got back up to my heaviest in 2 yrs after Xmas and was upset and disgusted. After a couple false starts, finally got seriously back on Jan 10 and doing pretty well, but the weight loss is slower and I am having to work harder at it. However, the good news I think about starting over is that you can learn from your mistakes -- I realize now that I have to make it a way of life, particularly as after the first week, I really do feel immensely better when I don't eat flour and sugar. And I feel like I was better prepared this time to do the planning and cooking, to deal with the cravings (just knowing they were coming) and to deal with the people who are inevitably bent on sabotage. I hope you get back on! And take pride in the fact that you still have kept 30 lbs off (oddly, I also have kept off the first 30 lbs I lost several years ago, on weight watchers). Rebeq |
